As the 2024 crop season moves forward, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) will contact producers nationwide to determine the effects of conservation on working lands. The USDA’s Conservation Effects Assessment Project (CEAP) is an expanded effort to help the farming community better understand the environmental impacts of conservation practices. NASS representatives will visit farms between August 2024 and February 2025 to collect information such as on-farm production practices; chemical, fertilizer and manure applications; integrated pest management activities; and installed conservation practices. The survey data will be published in the Crop Production report in 2025. [link]
In collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Welfare and Agro National Corporation (AgroNAT), the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) in the Maldives continues to support good agricultural practices through the ongoing Project for Developing the Agriculture Economy (PDSAE). Supported by the Government of Japan, this initiative aims to fortify food security and livelihoods by ensuring access to affordable, safe, high-quality, and nutritious food, the latest venture of which was a hands-on training program in Good Agricultural Practices. The opening ceremony of the Agri-Training Program for AgroNat commenced on July 1, 2024, at the Hanimaadhoo Social Center, with over 14 farmers from across the Maldives participating. Spanning from July 1 to June 25, this program is tailored to build the capacity of farmers with essential skills to improve plant propagation, nursery management, soil fertility, pest and disease management, and other essential techniques. UK supermarket chain, Morrisons, has announced a new collaboration with The Institute for Agriculture and Horticulture (TIAH) to assist its farmers in enhancing their skills and achieving net-zero carbon emissions. The partnership involves piloting TIAH’s digital platform, which receives partial funding from Defra, aiming to address skills gaps in agriculture. In collaboration with the School of Sustainable Food and Farming at Harper Adams University, TIAH has created four educational modules. These modules offer farmers a structured approach to learning essential topics, including calving best practices, common beef diseases, measuring and improving growth, and efficient forage usage. Lloyds Banking Group has reinforced its commitment to UK farmers by providing fee-free lending, financial support and resources for agroforestry projects over £25,000. The banking group offers financing for agroforestry costs through its Clean Growth Financing Initiative (CGFI), which features a zero per cent set-up fee for term lending on sustainable farming investments. This loan helps UK farmers reduce their ecological impact while enhancing the financial and environmental resilience of their businesses. [link]
The regenerative kelp farm and skincare company, Cold Current Kelp, has been awarded $175,000 by the US Department of Agriculture to support the company’s research and development for the use of kelp extracts in skincare and other non-food applications. Cold Current Kelp is a women-owned, vertically-integrated regenerative kelp farm on the coast of Maine. The company not only farms its own kelp, but also specializes in the development of innovative uses for its seaweed extracts, such as in skin care products. With the significant funding injection provided by the USDA, Cold Current Kelp will carry out research to determine the feasibility of using a relatively novel green extraction method to obtain bioactive compounds from Maine-grown sugar kelp. Unlike conventional methods, this method of extraction does not require the use of toxic solvents and is expected to result in higher extraction yields. [link]
Some 132 businesses and financial institutions with combined annual revenues of $1.1 trillion have called for the governments of the world to strengthen their nature policies in the build up to biodiversity conference COP 16. The call comes over 18 months after the adoption of the Global Biodiversity Framework at COP 15 in Montreal, as businesses asked governments to move faster on nature policy before the COP 16 conference begins in Cali, Colombia in just under 100 days. The group is calling on governments to ensure that businesses and financial actors protect nature and restore degraded ecosystems, in part by managing resources sustainably, embedding nature into their disclosures, aligning their financial flows towards being nature positive, and strengthening global agreements. According to the latest results from the Conservation Tillage Transect survey, 1.7 million acres of farmland are now under living cover across all crops in Indiana. This significant milestone underscores the increasing adoption of cover crops by farmers, driven by their multiple benefits for soil health, water management and overall farm productivity. Apart from corn and soybeans, cover crops are planted on more acres than any other commodity crop in Indiana. Cover crops are typically planted in the fall after harvest and designed to protect the soil and keep roots in the ground throughout the winter, which improves soil health and helps filter water runoff. The conservation survey also showed that about 69% of row crop acres were not tilled and about 17% had employed reduced tillage over winter, after the 2023 harvest. [link]
A new study finds that the proportional allocation of water, and not additional taxes on the resource, is more effective from the point of view of those engaged in agriculture. The study was produced by the WEARE group within the University of Cordoba and has been published in the Water Resources Management journal. Climate change, increasing drought, population growth and consumption habits have spotlighted the scarcity of water available for agriculture in Spain, making it necessary to adopt measures that help reduce consumption and better manage water for crops. “Regenerative agriculture” may be quite a buzzword these days, but the agrifood industry still has a lot of work to do when it comes to generating consumer demand, says a new study from EIT Food Consumer Observatory. Critically, more consumers need a better understanding of what regenerative agriculture actually is and its benefits to both the food system and planetary health. Called “Cultivating Resilience: Regenerative Agriculture,” the study surveyed consumers across 17 European countries to gather data on awareness around regenerative agriculture as well as drivers and hurdles to consuming products produced through regen practices. While many consumers say they recognize the term “regenerative agriculture,” a much smaller group “accurately know[s] what regenerative agriculture is,” according to the study. [link]
Lancaster County, PA is a priority planting area for the nonprofit Pasa Sustainable Agriculture as it seeks to support the Ten Million Trees project, with the window for ordering the first round of free trees closing this past week. The Ten Million Trees project, backed by the nonprofit Chesapeake Bay Foundation, aims to plant 10 million trees across Pennsylvania by the end of 2025. Due to the impact of agriculture on local waterways, Lancaster County is a priority area for planting. County residents can go to lanc.news/PASAtrees to find the order form. Trees will be available for pickup in late September to mid-October. Three pickup sites are available: Columbia, Dauphin or Westmoreland counties. [link]
Diestel Family Ranch, the family-owned U.S.-based producer of sustainably raised turkeys, announced it has become the first turkey producer to achieve Regenified™ certification, a global leader in regenerative agriculture verification. Regenified’s seal is the first third-party regenerative program to be recognized and accepted by USDA Food Safety and Inspection Services for single and multi-ingredient products. As part of this certification, Diestel sourced more than 650 tons of Certified Regenified™ corn earlier this spring. To achieve certification, Diestel met Regenified’s rigorous 6-3-4™ Standards which include soil health, adaptive stewardship, and ecosystem processes. [link]

The two brands have recently launched sustainably made whiskeys: Brother’s Bond Regenerative Grain Straight Bourbon and WhistlePig FarmStock Beyond Bonded Rye Whiskey. For a limited time, the expressions are available as an online bundle for US$189.99, with a portion of the sales earmarked for Regenerate America, the regenerative agriculture coalition stewarded by the Kiss the Ground documentary. The UK and Belize governments launched the Resilient and Biodiverse Landscapes of Northern Mesoamerica project to restore and conserve the Selva Maya Forest through sustainable practices. In Belize, the Biodiverse Landscapes Fund will invest approximately $3.2 million between September 2023 to October 2029. Activities in country are being implemented through a consortium of organizations including the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS), Belize Maya Forest Trust (BMFT), Program for Belize, Friends for Conservation and Development (FCD), and the Julian Cho Society. BLF will be supporting these organizations in the protection and conservation of Selva Maya Forest in Belize, one of the great forests of the Mesoamerica Landscape. [link]
Nine years of data analysis from Illinois farms found the most profitable acres were one-pass light tillage for corn and no-till soybeans. Precision Conservation Management released its summary of in-field conservation practices data that compares various tillage systems and analyzes the profitability of each corn and soybean field enrolled in the program. According to PCM’s 2015-2023 data, the most frequently observed tillage systems on the most profitable acres were one-pass light tillage for corn — one pass with low-disturbance tillage — and no-till for soybeans. More than two tillage passes were never more profitable. [link]

Italy sealed a regenerative agriculture deal with Algeria as part of its ambitious Mattei Plan, which seeks to create a new partnership with African countries to address the root causes of irregular migration. The office of Premier Giorgia Meloni said the accord entailed "the largest investment in sustainable agriculture made so far by Italy in North Africa". The agreement provides for a strategic concession by the Algerian government of 36,000 hectares, which the company Bonifiche Ferraresi S.p.A. will recover for agricultural use, creating an entire production chain. Activities will start as early as 2024 through the creation of wells and an initial sowing of cereals. [link]
A Norfolk, England firm's "revolutionary" soil analysis tool is set to play a leading role in a new farming project which digs down into the roots of crop performance. PES Technologies, based in Diss, has developed a sensor system which can "smell" a soil's biological signature, allowing farmers and agronomists to carry out quick, cost-effective tests in the field without the need to send samples to a laboratory. This can help them choose which crops to grow, and how to treat them. [link]
A record amount of Connecticut's farmland was protected in 2023, which comes at a time when the state is hemorrhaging farmland and seeing a handful of farms go up for sale. The Department of Agriculture said that the 23 farm parcels protected last year were the most in a single calendar year since the Farmland Preservation Program was established in 1978, with those 23 farm parcels spanning a total of 1,560 acres. A total of $10 million was spent to acquire the conservation easements – 51 percent from the state, 47 percent from the U.S. Department of Agriculture and 2 percent from local nonprofits and community land trusts. Syngenta Biologicals and Intrinsyx Bio announced a collaboration to bring a novel biological solution to agricultural markets globally. The collaboration will boost farmers’ access to a custom selection of Intrinsyx Bio’s proprietary endophyte formulations. Endophytes – small microorganisms that colonize in plants – fix atmospheric nitrogen directly into the plant, increasing the availability and uptake of key nutrients such as phosphorus and micronutrients that are important for plant health. This reduces the need for synthetic fertilizers, offering farmers greater flexibility in their nutrient management strategies while lowering the environmental impact of farming. Formulations will be offered as seed treatment and foliar application in key agricultural crops. [link]
The UNDP and the government of Switzerland have commenced the third phase of their Green Commodities Program, which instigates transformative changes in the sustainability of agriculture production around the world. Building upon the success of the two precedent phases, the renewed partnership between UNDP and the Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO) aims to further enhance sustainable agricultural commodity production in five countries: Peru, Indonesia, Malaysia, Ghana, and Brazil. The project's emphasis on multi-stakeholder collaboration seeks to overcome an intertwined web of economic, ecological, and political challenges, engaging national and local governments, private sectors, and global stakeholders. The University of Manitoba has signed four new partnership agreements with institutions across Morocco to advance shared research priorities on green ammonia while supporting cutting-edge innovation, sustainable development, health, and Indigenous economic reconciliation. By working together, the hope is that collaboration and exchange can magnify the impacts of research to the mutual benefit of institutions and provide a model for environmentally sustainable food production across Africa and around the world. A key priority for this initiative is to reduce the environmental impact of agriculture through the development of new sustainable fertilizers, such as green ammonia. [link]
Major funding cuts to Illinois soil and water conservation district's staffing in the new state budget has the potential to hamper these efforts going forward. The new state budget slashes the district's administrative funding that goes toward office staffing and other costs, from $8.5 million to $4.5 million. Losing those employees will limit the number of projects districts can complete each year, creating a gap in Illinois conservation efforts. [link]
The vice president of sustainability with Better Earth says the company’s new compostable foodservice packaging is the first to be made exclusively with materials grown using regenerative agriculture methods. Native perennial grasses like miscanthus, switchgrass and sorghum are being grown in the southeastern United States on what would otherwise be underutilized land. After harvest, this grass creates the company's compostable packaging. Aside from cutting down on plastics and other packaging in landfills, these products also offer carbon benefits. [link]
University of New Hampshire researchers are working on a new project that studies integrating crop and animal farming in forested areas for enhanced food production, carbon sequestration and climate resilience. The five-year project, called Promoting Climate-Smart Sustainable Agriculture in New England through Regionally Adapted Agroforestry Systems (ADAPT), is funded with a $10 million grant from the United States Department of Agriculture. New England is one of the nation's most forested regions, offering challenges and opportunities for producing food more sustainably. [link]
Tidal Grow AgriScience, a division of Tidal Vision Products Inc., has been awarded a Fertilizer Production Expansion Program (FPEP) grant by the USDA, helping to significantly increase production of its popular seafood hydrolysate liquid fertilizers, Oceanic and SeaPhos. Tidal Grow AgriScience manufactures novel plant nutrition and crop protection solutions. With this grant, a new facility breaks ground in Texas and expands production in Washington, tripling the capacity of these bioactive carbon-based fertilizers and accelerating the adoption of regenerative agriculture solutions. Growing interest in sustainably-raised meats, including grass-fed beef, is challenging meat alternatives, which continue to struggle with adoption and repeat purchases among their primary consumer base – flexitarians. Among U.S. households, 72 million identify as flexitarian and nearly half are buying plant-based foods, according to data from Numerator. Furthermore, 98% of consumers who buy plant-based protein alternatives also buy animal meat. Sustainable meat production is rising across the food industry, as products with Regenerative Organic Certification experience significant growth. [link]
A transdisciplinary team of researchers, educators and extension experts led by The Ohio State University has received a $10 million grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) to advance and co-create solutions to climate resilience of farmers in the Midwest. In addition to empowering farmers to lead the design and innovation of practical approaches to climate-smart farming, the project will provide opportunities to train the next generation of students in the use of on-farm research and community stakeholder collaborations as strategies to address future farming system challenges. Alongside Ohio State, the project will involve close partnerships with researchers, extension staff and students at Central State University, the University of Missouri, Lincoln University Missouri and Solutions from the Land. The general public has limited knowledge of the U.S. farm bill that politicians are debating on Capitol Hill, according to the June 2024 Consumer Food Insights (CFI) Report from Purdue University. Around one-third of American adults have never heard of the bill, while a similar proportion has heard of the bill but do not know what programs it supports. [link]
A new Responsible Agricultural Investment (RAI) Tool for Agribusiness has been developed by IISD, Cerise+SPTF, and other partner organizations with support from the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation to offer a practical framework for business leaders to understand what sustainable food practices look like, along with how to identify gaps and prioritize improvements. Intended to be used by a wide range of stakeholders engaged in promoting sustainable agricultural investments—such as agribusinesses, financial investors, and industry associations—the tool shows how to create a clear, actionable plan. It has been tested by agribusinesses in Africa and Asia and refined based on their feedback and is designed to be compliant with internationally recognized best practices of sustainable business conduct, such as the principles on responsible investment in the agricultural and food systems (CFS-RAI Principles) and the International Finance Corporation (IFC) Performance Standards. UK retailer, Co-op, is supporting on-farm projects designed to improve sustainability and efficiencies through its new Future Farming Fund. It will help fund projects related to soil health, genetics, brassica crops, data management, and nature on farms. The projects are due to begin in August and are being led by the Co-op’s Beef and Lamb Farming Group with financial support and resources provided by major meat processor, Dunbia. [link]
Researchers in South Australia are digging deep into history of soil biology in the state to gain a better understanding of how the soil microbiome functions to ensure sustainable broadacre farming into the future. A new article in Advances in Agronomy aims to increase awareness of the importance of soil biology in farming systems, particularly in light of past practices. A core aim of the study is to determine whether the diversity and composition of soil communities from past farming systems differ from those of present farming systems, along with a goal of assessing changes in the soil microbiome and the evolution of broadacre cropping management practices in the Southern Australian farming zone. FoodDrinkEurope has unveiled its Food Investment and Resilience Plan, aimed at bolstering the competitiveness and sustainability of the European food and drink industry comprising 291,000 companies with a collective turnover of €1.1 trillion. The plan calls for a more targeted Common Agriculture Policy (CAP) and the development of a comprehensive food investment strategy, which includes securing at least €30 billion in the first year for sustainable agriculture, along with €7 billion for plastic recycling targets and €5.5 billion for the current loan gap in the agri-food space. The plan also calls for the simplification of regulations, the creation of a food policy coordination unit, the removal of trade barriers and enhanced international cooperation, and faster procedures for the risk assessment and approval of sustainable food solutions. Potato breeder, Tuberosum Technologies, has announced the successful registration of four True Potato Seed (TPS) varieties, marking the first time TPS varieties have been officially registered in Canada, heralding a new era of innovation and sustainability in potato farming. The newly registered tetraploid TPS varieties are the first step in enhancing the global potato industry, offering producers a more efficient, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly method of cultivation. Unlike traditional tuber-based potato propagation, True Potato Seeds offer numerous advantages including improved disease resilience, easier storage, reduced transportation/phytosanitary constraints, and a more flexible supply chain. New figures from Zero Carbon Forum and Wildfarmed say that 3.6 million tonnes of carbon could be saved by 2030 if every operator across the UK hospitality and brewing sector switched to regenerative flour and barley. Roughly 35% of the UK's emissions come from the food and drink sector, with Zero Carbon Forum's benchmark data finding that flour and barley production is responsible for 2.5% of the hospitality and brewing sector's emissions. The news comes at a time when extreme weather and record-breaking rain are putting our food systems at risk, with crops underwater, depleted harvests and higher costs for farmers, operators and consumers. The Cooperative Research Centre for High Performance Soils (Soil CRC) in Australia is investing a further $4.1 million in new research with another eight projects over the next three years, aiming to increase growers' knowledge of soil issues and investigate new options to improve soil conditions. The latest investment brings the total cash spending on projects to more than $40 million since the CRC commenced in 2017. Soil CRC chief executive officer Michael Crawford said these projects build on previous Soil CRC research into soil data and performance metrics, novel products and technology to increase soil function, and farmer engagement and adoption. The Kansas Association of Conservation Districts (KACD) is partnering again with Archer-Daniels-Midland Company (ADM), to offer their program to reward producers across Kansas for planting cover crops and implementing other regenerative practices. Cover crop payments range from $10 - $25 per acre depending on when the acres were first planted to a cover crop. This is the third year this program has been offered across the state. In 2023 Kansas farmers and ranchers planted and enrolled 189,000 acres of cover crops as well as other practice activities for producers that had wheat in their rotation. The 2024 program is very similar to what was offered in 2023 through ADM. [link]
Amazon will devise a new standard for verifying the quality of carbon offsets that it needs in order to hit its net-zero targets, with the new standard covering reforestation and agroforestry, according to Reuters. Amazon has quit carbon offset standards that its founder Jeff Bezos helped to fund, opting instead for a new standard. The company is now working on Abacus, which would be an alternative to the standards developed by another organization that Amazon has been funding: the Integrity Council for the Voluntary Carbon Market. A new publication from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) sets out how coffee produced through agroforestry can improve resilience and ensure livelihoods in the face of climate change. The publication explains how agroforestry practices – essentially farming with trees - can be used as a climate risk reduction strategy that preserves ecosystems, improves production, generates higher incomes, enhances ecosystem sustainability and fosters resilient livelihoods. It presents a pilot project to promote coffee produced through agroforestry among producers in Malawi and Uganda, designed and implemented by FAO and the Slow Food Coffee Coalition, an international network that promotes sustainable coffee value chains, with funding from the Japanese Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries and supported by the Mountain Partnership Secretariat. RPTU University of Kaiserslautern-Landau has shown for the first time, in a joint study with BOKU University, that permaculture brings about a significant improvement in biodiversity, soil quality and carbon storage, based on studies in Germany and Luxembourg. Permaculture uses natural cycles and ecosystems as a blueprint. Food is produced in an agricultural ecosystem that is as self-regulating, natural and diverse as possible. The study, published in the journal Communications Earth & Environment, comprehensively investigated the effects of this planning and management concept on the environment, finding three times the number of plant species on permaculture areas relative to conventional sites. A new research project led by the University of Copenhagen will receive around €78 million over a period of seven years and focus on the development of climate-resilient crops. The program leverages environmental DNA (eDNA) to pioneer sustainable agriculture. It seeks to decode how ecosystems and crops responded and adapted to past environmental changes, aiming to enhance crop resilience and agroecosystem sustainability for a more sustainable future. A new $1.5 million program in New Brunswick, Canada aims to offset the cost of feasibility studies for agriculture-focused anaerobic digester development within the farm sector and reduce greenhouse gases while fostering farm sustainability. The sequence of anaerobic digestion involves breaking down biodegradable materials by bacteria without oxygen. Agriculture Minister, Margaret Johnson, said that anaerobic digesters provide an innovative way to reduce waste and generate energy. The Anaerobic Digester Feasibility Studies Funding Program will help farmers plan how they can use this important technology. [link]

American Farmland Trust is holding Advanced Soil Health Training, a series of courses focused on adaptive soil health management funded by the USDA through the Partnerships for Climate-Smart Commodities program. Partnering with Truterra/Land-O’ Lakes, AFT will sponsor and train soil health mentors who will share their knowledge and expertise with their communities. This program is designed to deepen soil health understanding of corn, soybean, wheat, and dairy farmers and farm advisors who have an interest in improving soil health and who will share their expertise with their clients, communities, and the next generation of farmers. The hands-on curriculum combines one day of classroom time with a half-day visit to innovative local demonstration farms to see soil health practices in action. [link]
The US has reportedly urged the EU to delay its Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), which is set to come into force in December, because the new rules would hurt US producers of cocoa products, timber and other forest-risk commodities. The Financial Times revealed that the Biden Administration had sent a letter dated May 30 to the European Commission (EC) warning the law posed “critical challenges” to US businesses and should be delayed until the challenges have been addressed. The EUDR would require companies to provide a “due diligence” statement supported by geolocation data to confirm their products have not come from deforested land after 2020. The regulation impacts various supply chains, including cocoa, soybeans, coffee, palm oil and beef. It is set to be reviewed in June 2028. [link]
The CEA Alliance says it has released the industry’s first sustainability framework developed by indoor growers for indoor growers. CEA Alliance says the framework will drive credibility, transparency and continuous improvement through standardized approaches for sustainability measurement, guiding indoor growers through both key impacts to measure and metrics for measuring them. This new framework includes 60 metrics that support 20 key performance indicators across a variety of environmental and social aspects of indoor growing, including natural resource and climate impacts, pesticide use, waste generation, food safety, employment practices, community engagement, and food security impacts. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) announced an investment of $70 million in seven creative and visionary agricultural projects to transform the U.S. food and agricultural system and sustainably increase agricultural production in ways that also reduce its environmental footprint. The program focuses on a broad range of research, education and Extension solutions – from addressing agricultural workforce challenges and promoting land stewardship to addressing climate change impacts in agriculture and filling critical needs in food and nutrition. Awards of $10 million will be used for coordinated agricultural projects (CAPs), which promote collaboration, open communication, information exchange and reduce duplication efforts by coordinating activities among individuals, institutions, states and regions. Despite sharp deceleration in food inflation since a post-pandemic peak, US consumers deem current food pricing as unpalatable, according to new research from the Purdue University College of Agriculture’s Center for Food Demand Analysis and Sustainability (CFDAS). In the Purdue CFDAS May 2024 Consumer Food Insights (CFI) survey, 56% of more than 1,200 US shoppers said food prices rose the most over the past 12 months versus other common household expenses. That perception isn’t borne out by inflation data, however. The May 2024 Consumer Price Index for food shows a year-over-year gain of 2.1% (+1% for food at home, +4% for food away from home), compared with 20.3% for vehicle insurance, 4.9% for childcare, 4.7% for utilities, 4.6% for housing, 4.3% for home insurance, 3.1% for health care, 2.9% for transportation, 1.3% for entertainment/leisure and -2.5% for household items, based on US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) data. The Central Statistics Office (CSO) in Ireland released new information for 2023 that shows the area of new forestry planted by farmers accounted for 47% of total afforestation during the year, however trees planted by farmers have been on a downward trend since the early 2000s. In 2007, trees planted by farmers made up over 90% of total afforestation rates that year. Last year, Irish farmers planted 773 ha (1,855 acres) of trees while non-farmers planted 877 ha (2,105 acres). Generally, non-farmer tree plantings have been on the uprise in Ireland since the early 2000s. There were 287 afforestation parcels planted in 2023, with an average size of 5.8 ha (14 acres). [link]
A report from certification body Regenagri suggests that regenerative agriculture is becoming more and more prevalent in global farming. The regenagri program now supports more than 230,000 farms and 855 supply chain operators globally, with the area of land under its certification tripling in 2023 to 1.46 million hectares (3.5 million acres) compared to 487,000 hectares in 2022. Looking ahead, Regenagri aims to double its impact in 2024 by expanding its program to cover two million hectares of land, supporting 500,000 farms across the world. [link]
McCain Foods announced the expansion of its Innovation Hub farms in North America, adding four new farms across three different regions as part of its initiative to implement regenerative agriculture practices across its global potato fields by 2030. Its new hubs will be located on potato farms in Alberta, Wisconsin and Maine, with an additional hub on an onion farm in Idaho. The Innovation Hubs are designed to conduct commercial-scale research trials that are specific to the local growing conditions. This approach allows McCain to test and refine sustainable agricultural practices, such as cover cropping, crop diversity and advanced irrigation techniques. [link]
Three leading players in the food ingredients industry – Raffinerie Tirlemontoise, Beneo and Puratos –have joined forces to launch the 'Climate Farming Project,' supporting Belgian farmers to adopt more sustainable and regenerative agricultural practices. The initiative, which will run until 2025, involves 15 pilot farms across Belgium cultivating sugar beet, wheat and chicory in an area equivalent to over 1,100 football fields. The farmers will implement a range of regenerative techniques, including reducing mineral nitrogen fertilization and pesticide use, enhancing biodiversity by planting flower strips and hedges, and improving soil health by increasing the biomass of cover and catch crops. Dairy farmers in Denmark face having to pay an annual tax of 672 krone ($96) per cow for the planet-heating emissions they generate. The country’s coalition government agreed this past week to introduce the world’s first carbon emissions tax on agriculture. It will mean new levies on livestock starting in 2030.
The tax, expected to be approved by Denmark’s parliament later this year, will amount to 300 krone ($43) per tonne (1.1 ton) of CO2-equivalent emissions from livestock from 2030, rising to 750 krone ($107) in 2035. A 60% tax break will apply, meaning that farmers will effectively be charged 120 krone ($17) per tonne of livestock emissions per year from 2030, rising to 300 krone ($43) in 2035. In the first two years, the proceeds from the tax will be used to support the agricultural industry’s green transition and then reassessed. [link]
The Nigerian Federal Government said it is investing in climate-smart agriculture to enhance food production and promote agroforestry and conservation agriculture amidst challenges posed by climate change and its impacts on food security. Minister of Environment, Balarabe Abbas Lawal, made the remark at a high-level event on ‘Partnering to Scale up Climate Actions in Fragile and Conflict Affected Situations – Zooming in on Food Security’ held in the Embassy of UAE in Rome. Lawal failed to mention how much money will be allocated to these efforts but said Nigeria is taking concerted efforts to address climate change and its impact on the country's food security. [link]
CIBO Technologies, the climate software company for agriculture, announced a multi-year strategic partnership with The DeLong Co., Inc., a privately-owned and family-run enterprise based in Clinton, Wisconsin with 38 grain, agronomy and export locations throughout the United States. Through this collaboration, CIBO Impact will help farmers within The DeLong Co., Inc.'s grower network find, qualify for and enroll in regenerative agriculture incentive programs backed by the USDA and private companies with Scope 3 emissions targets. ADM's Golden Peanut processing subsidiary will collaborate with The J.M. Smucker Co. and the National Black Growers Council (NBGC) to support the adoption of regenerative agriculture practices across 20,000 peanut acres in the southeast United States. As with ADM's other regenerative agriculture efforts spanning the globe, Golden Peanut's work with Smucker will feature direct financial support for farmers; easy processes and cutting-edge technologies to ensure low barriers to entry; and a broad range of support and guidance for farmers from both internal and third-party experts, including the Flint River Soil and Water Conservation District. Regenerative practices covered by the program will include continuous living roots (cover crops), improved fertilizer and pesticide efficiency and use of reduced tillage practices. [link]

The Agriculture Committee of the Ohio House of Representatives has held its first hearing on a bill that would establish a task force to develop a healthy soils initiative for the state. The bill directs the task force to develop a comprehensive action plan to coordinate efforts to carry out the healthy soils initiative using standards for organic matter, biological activity and diversity, and soil structure as measures to assess improved soil health. In addition, the task force is to develop recommendations for testing of chemicals such as dioxin in the soil. The development of recommendations for using plants for soil remediation, including alfalfa, sunflower, date palms, and mustards is also required. [link]
The Maryland Department of Agriculture has announced the annual sign-up period for the Cover Crop Program will take place at soil conservation district offices statewide from June 21 through July 17, 2024. One of the department’s most popular initiatives, the program provides farmers with cost-share assistance to offset seed, labor, and equipment costs to plant fall cover crops protecting local water quality, building healthy soils, and capturing carbon from the atmosphere. To help create diversity, eligible cover crop species may be mixed with radish and legumes, including clover, Austrian winter peas, and hairy vetch, using a variety of two- and three-species mixes. The department has allocated approximately $20 million for its 2024-2025 Cover Crop Program. [link]
Member states in the European Council voted to approve the long-contested Nature Restoration Law, a key piece of legislation aimed at protecting and restoring natural ecosystems, and creating a mandated target for EU countries implement measures to restore at least 20% of the EU’s land and sea areas by 2030. The Nature Restoration Law was initially proposed by the European Commission in June 2022, with an objective to restore ecosystems, habitats and species across the EU’s land and sea areas, with studies indicating that more than 80% of European habitats are in poor shape. Under the new legislation, member states will be required to put into place restoration measures to restore at least 30% of habitats that are in poor condition by 2030, increasing to 60% by 2040, and 90% by 2050, and to regularly submit national restoration plans indicating how they will deliver on the targets. The law sets out specific requirements for a broad range of ecosystems, covering wetlands, grasslands, forests, rivers and lakes, as well as marine ecosystems such as seagrass and sponge and coral beds. A new map from the Save Soil movement – backed by the UNEP, UNCCD, UNFAO, WFP, and IUCN amongst others – illustrates that 95% of Earth's soil is on course to be degraded by 2050. Degraded soil, resulting largely from intensive farming practices, is low in “organic matter,” which means it does not retain water as effectively, making us vulnerable to climate shocks such as droughts, wildfires, and water shortages. Every second, an equivalent of four football fields of healthy soil becomes degraded – adding up to a total of 100 million hectares every year. Non-degraded healthy soil is a direct necessity for 95% of the food production for more than 8 billion people. [link]
AgMission has partnered with PepsiCo to award three grants to researchers in Australia, Mexico and Canada for a total combined $6.7 million investment to support evidence-based research on the effectiveness of climate-smart agriculture practices that incorporate regenerative agriculture principles. Climate-smart practices can help reduce carbon emissions and provide environmental benefits associated with regenerative agriculture; however, limited data exists on how to effectively incorporate these practices on farms. All three grantees awarded through this effort will work closely with farmers and farmer organizations to co-develop transition plans to introduce regenerative practices, improve understanding of the impacts and outcomes, and contribute to scientific evidence that can help overcome widespread adoption challenges. Researchers at Tyndall National Institute, based at University Cork (UCC), have developed a groundbreaking sensor that will allow farmers to reduce their use of chemical fertilizers. Tyndall’s ground-breaking Electronic Smart System (ESS) sensor is buried in the soil and monitors nutrient levels in real time. The sensor connects to the Internet of Things (IoT) and uses cloud technology to collect and analyze the data, generating a report for the farmer. The report provides farmers with real-time insights into changing soil conditions, helping them to optimize fertilizer, reduce nutrient losses and environmental impacts. [link]
Countries in Southeast Asia need to apply more innovative, region-specific solutions that fit their local context in order to tackle the challenges facing agriculture and crop production, according to a new report on food systems sustainability from New CropLife Asia and the EU-ASEAN Business Council. The report stresses that agricultural approaches “must be designed from and for the regional sustainability context” and not outside of it. It urges Southeast Asian countries to resist pressure from developed nations to adopt approaches that do not align with their environmental context. The document further outlines the agricultural sector in Southeast Asia's significant challenges from climate change, which threatens lower yields and increased risks from flooding and drought, as well as pests, weeds and disease. The report says these remain acute due to tropical agriculture, which has its own unique parameters. [link]
Chocolate, candy and snacks producer Hershey announced a series of new climate-related goals, with new targets to reduce emissions originating in its value chain, including Forest Land and Agriculture (FLAG) emissions. The company’s new goals include reducing FLAG emissions by 36%, and non-FLAG Scope 3 emissions by 30% by 2030, on a 2018 baseline, marking an increase from Hershey’s prior target to reduce Scope 3 by 25% by 2030. Hershey outlined a series of initiatives it is pursuing in order to reduce emissions across its value chain, including sourcing approximately 80% of electricity from renewable and zero-emission sources in 2023, creating a cross-functional team to oversee delivery of plant-level energy reduction targets, and investing in projects promoting good agricultural practices and technology in its cocoa, dairy and sugar supply chains. Grocery retail group Ahold Delhaize USA has teamed with global snacking company Kellanova and North American agribusiness Bartlett to reduce scope 3 greenhouse-gas (GHG) emissions from wheat farming across the value chain. Scheduled to kick off this summer, the pilot program will use financial investments from Ahold Delhaize USA, Kellanova and Bartlett to support the implementation of regenerative agricultural practices among North Carolina wheat farmers. The wheat harvested and milled from these farms will be used in combination with conventionally grown wheat to manufacture Kellanova’s Cheez-It and Club crackers, which will be sold at Ahold Delhaize USA banners in 2025. The Healey-Driscoll Administration today announced over $1 million in grants to promote and protect Massachusetts soil health. The Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs (EEA) awarded Healthy Soils Plan Implementation Challenge Grants to 15 organizations to improve the management of soils in agriculture, prevent soil degradation, and support soil’s critical role in carbon sequestration. Grantees will explore soil health challenges in five different types of land uses: agriculture, forests, wetlands, recreational and ornamental, and impervious environments. [link]
The Maryland Department of Agriculture has announced that 23 projects will receive grant funding totaling $993,000 through the Healthy Soils Competitive Fund. This pioneering grant program provides financial assistance to qualifying farms and organizations—both large and small—that adopt innovative conservation practices that benefit climate, soil, and water. Established in 2023, the Healthy Soils Competitive Fund provides winning applicants up to $50,000 to support three years of enhanced healthy soil and agroforestry practices. Grant recipients receive up to 40% of the funds upfront, with the remainder distributed annually following verification of progress. [link]
ADM is collaborating with Ooni Pizza Ovens, Edinburgh, Scotland, to introduce a line of flour produced using regenerative agriculture practices. The flour may be used to bake pizza at home. US consumers may purchase the product through the Ooni website. ADM launched its regenerative agriculture program in the United Kingdom in 2023 to support a farming approach designed to protect and improve soil health, biodiversity, climate and water resources. Ooni offers a range of pizza ovens as well as dough balls, a dough mix, flour, yeast and pizza sauce. [link]
Indigo Ag and Microsoft announced a new carbon removal purchase agreement, with Indigo delivering 40,000 tons of carbon credits to Microsoft generated through the promotion of regenerative agriculture practices by U.S. farmers. Indigo Ag helps farmers adopt regenerative agriculture practices including cover crops, diversified crop rotation, reduced tillage and improved nitrogen timing. Under its program, farmers add the new practices with agronomic support from Indigo, while the company also calculates the carbon credits through the use of soil samples and on-farm data, validates the findings with a verifier, with results submitted to a carbon registry, for issuance of the credits, which can be sold to corporate buyers. The University of Sydney is leading a three-year research study with eight farms across NSW and Queensland in Australia to examine how soil health on cotton farms can be improved by using cover crops. Conservationists continue to warn of the environmental harm caused by the cotton industry, and cotton growers know that they need to shake this image and continue to become more sustainable. The hope is that the new study can produce information that helps growers understand how they can boost their soil health depending on their specific location. [link]
A Kauai nonprofit in Hawaii is trumpeting tropical agroforestry as a way to solve food insecurity. The largest breadfruit agroforest in the state is run by The Breadfruit Institute at The National Tropical Botanical Garden, with researchers calling it a game changer. The Breadfruit Institute has incorporated over 150 different plants on its multi-dimensional farm, donating 30 tons of food to the Kauai Independent Food Bank in the last five years. Hawaii imports 85%-90% of its food, making the state vulnerable to economic and environmental catastrophes that could affect shipping into the islands. [link]
The International Panel of Experts on Sustainable Food Systems (IPES-Food) released a report entitled, Land Squeeze, finding that land ownership is being consolidated in the hands of a few powerful actors, squeezing out smaller farmers, pastoralists, Indigenous Peoples, and others who rely on traditional farmland. Since 2000, land around twice the size of Germany has been snatched up globally in transnational deals, according to IPES-Food’s report. Approximately 87 percent of these land grabs occurred in regions of high biodiversity. The top 1 percent of world’s largest farms now control 70 percent of land, leaving smaller-scale farmers behind. Chivas Brothers, the Pernod Ricard business dedicated to Scotch whisky and makers of Chivas Regal and Aberlour, announced a new agriculture program supporting sustainable farming practices among Scottish barley growers represented by Bairds Malt and Scotgrain. The partnership will work collaboratively to facilitate and further continuous improvement on-farm, while helping to future-proof the livelihoods of farmers in regional Scottish communities. It also intends to secure a proper supply of barley while reducing carbon emissions in the supply chain. [link]
Pennsylvania Governor, Josh Shapiro, visited a local farm in Lancaster County and announced a $10.3 million state agriculture innovation program designed to support and attract new agriculture businesses that focus on innovation and sustainability. The Agriculture Innovation and Conservation program would provide grants to farmers and other businesses to help them implement new technologies and practices that are designed to improve soil health, reduce runoff and erosion, and increase energy efficiency. The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture (PDA) will deliver grants to farmers and other businesses interested in participating in the program. [link]
The Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) is now accepting applications for a grant to develop enterprises, supply chains, and markets for continuous living cover crops and cropping systems in the early stage of commercial development. This is the third request for proposals under one-time funding provided to the MDA from the General Fund and the Minnesota Environment and Natural Resources Trust Fund. The goal is to provide grants to CLC crops and cropping systems value chain enterprises for equipment infrastructure and business and market development. The minimum award is $10,000 and the maximum award is $45,000. [link]
The Canadian Senate Committee on Agriculture has released a new study on Soil Health in Canada, evaluating the current status of soils inside the country and putting forward 25 recommendations for improving and maintaining those soils. The study, "Critical Ground: Why Soil is Essential to Canada's Economic, Environmental, Human and Social Health" advocates for the Federal Government to recognize a sense of urgency and act accordingly to protect and conserve Canada's soils. The study also recommends that the Federal Government designate soil as a strategic national resource or asset, that they appoint a national soils advocate, and that the Government of Canada support the development of a long-term overarching strategy to protect and conserve soil throughout Canada, including targets, timetables, and provisions for review. Pollination and Transformational Investing in Food Systems (TIFS), with support from The Rockefeller Foundation, today released a foundational guide for mobilizing and scaling capital for the regenerative transition. Canvassing the market of available resources for financing regenerative agriculture solutions, Financing Regenerative Agriculture offers insights from key market participants and provides interested stakeholders with a broad catalogue of the innovative regenerative financing instruments currently being deployed globally. With a $250,000 grant from The Rockefeller Foundation, Pollination partnered with TIFS to synthesize learnings and insights gained from over 40 primary interviews with practitioners in the field. The report expands awareness of structures that have the potential to scale capital deployment, positively impact millions of producers, regenerate millions of hectares of land, and mobilize sizeable investment flows in both developed and emerging markets. Senate Agriculture Committee Ranking Member John Boozman, R- Ark., released his framework for a Senate farm bill this week. His plan is similar to legislation passed by the House Agriculture Committee last month. One focal point includes changes to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, including a formula that would determine the amount of assistance that recipients receive, in an effort to make the program cost-neutral. The Senate farm bill proposal includes an average 15% reference price increase for all covered commodities. It also doubles funding for trade programs and includes additional funding for small business development, rural broadband and rural infrastructure programs. Finally, Boozman’s framework would shift funds from the Inflation Reduction Act into the farm bill’s conservation title. Republicans have long contended this will allow them to not only increase farm bill conservation spending, but also make it a permanent part of the farm bill. Democrats have been against this because it means a sizable percentage of IRA funding won’t necessarily be used to offset greenhouse gas emissions as originally intended. [link]
BeZero Carbon has delivered the first ever regenerative agriculture sub-sector rating for a project's ability to remove an equivalent amount of carbon from the atmosphere. The project, based in North America, has been assigned a BBB rating, indicating that it has a moderate likelihood of achieving a ton of CO2e removed or avoided. This is a significant advancement in the evaluation of soil-related agricultural practices within the carbon market. [link]
Canopy Farm Management announced the launch of Canopy Compass, a web-based, crop suitability mapping and farm analysis tool built to support farmers' transition to regenerative agriculture, identifying perennial crop possibilities across U.S. farmland. Developed in partnership with the Savanna Institute, a nonprofit agroforestry research organization, the Canopy Compass tool harnesses the most comprehensive and scientifically robust crop suitability maps available today. More than 90 maps from over a dozen sources are completely free to explore on the site. [link]
The National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF) announced $10.2 million in new grants to help agricultural producers implement voluntary conservation practices on farms and ranches across 14 states. The grants will leverage more than $4.9 million in matching contributions for a total conservation impact of $15.1 million. The grants were awarded through the Conservation Partners Program, a partnership between NFWF, the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative, Cargill, The J.M. Smucker Co., Nestlé, and additional support from a collaboration among General Mills, Walmart and Sam’s Club. The program awards competitive grants to accelerate the adoption of voluntary conservation practices and regenerative agriculture principles on private working lands and to support enrollment in Farm Bill conservation programs. A new study from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and Cornell University looks at how organic farmers' beliefs about the microbiome influence their soil management practices. The researchers surveyed 85 organic vegetable farmers in New York, gauging their microbiome beliefs, farming practices, and motivations. The farmers were also asked to provide soil samples from their fields. Overall, 96% of the farmers believed that the microbiome on their farm is influencing plant defenses and pest suppression. But there was much more variety in their beliefs about what factors promote a healthy microbiome. Broadly, researchers found that farmers who believed on-farm practices such as no-till or cover crops are important for influencing the microbiome also tended to adopt those practices. [link]
A new Farm Journal poll conducted on behalf of Invest in Our Land in 10 agricultural states shows U.S. farmers and ranchers believe conservation funding has an important role to play in building their operations’ resilience to increasingly extreme weather and addressing the effects of climate change. The poll — which surveyed 1,019 farmers, ranchers and producers across Pennsylvania, Arkansas, Georgia, Minnesota, Iowa, Colorado, South Dakota, Michigan, Montana and Wisconsin — also revealed that, by a double-digit margin, farmers and ranchers want Congress to protect $20 billion in conservation funding originally authorized by the Inflation Reduction Act and ensure those funds remain dedicated to climate-smart practices in the upcoming farm bill. ADM and Bayer are extending their collaboration to increase the adoption of regenerative agricultural practices among farmers in Europe in a bid to reduce carbon emissions and improve biodiversity and soil health. The partnership will expand beyond an initial 2023 oilseed assessment in Poland to include a wider range of crops, including corn, wheat and barley and geographically across Eastern Europe. The companies will provide farmers with financial and technical services to implement qualifying regenerative agriculture practices. These include minimum tillage, cover crops, companion crops, nutrient management, organic matter/manure use and crop rotation. [link]

Virginia Tech and Virginia Cooperative Extension recently received a $1 million grant to improve soil health, crop production, and water quality across the commonwealth. Led by Virginia Tech researchers and Virginia Cooperative Extension specialists, the project seeks to improve farming practices through a comprehensive strategy focused on farmer mentoring and widespread implementation of soil health best practices. The project builds on four soil health principles that the Natural Resources Conservation Service and state partners have promoted to conservation and farming communities for nearly 10 years, including: keep soil covered, minimize soil disturbance, maximize living roots, and energize with diversity. Environmental groups and farmers called for a transition to a sustainable agri-food system, climate action, and the approval of the stalled nature restoration law during a demonstration in Brussels. This protest, organized by NGOs Good Food Good Farming and Climate Action Network (CAN) Europe, took place in the final week of the European Parliament election campaign. Agricultural policy has taken an unusually high profile in the pre-election period, influenced by large-scale farmer protests that have spread across almost all EU countries since January. [link]
Congressional representatives have introduced the Capital for Beginning Farmers and Ranchers Act in the House and the Senate, directing the Farm Service Agency (FSA) to develop a multi-year operating loan pilot for beginning farmers to finance initial assets and the development of production and management systems. These expenditures can include intangible business infrastructure for crop records, payroll, and regulatory compliance, investments to increase soil fertility, and more. The new Act would enable direct and guaranteed FSA loans with a repayment term between 3 and 10 years; reduced interest rates between zero and 3%; flexible principal repayment; and robust technical assistance for development loan borrowers, among other benefits. Sri Lankan tea producer, Dilmah, is set to inaugurate its agroforestry program in Rilhena, in collaboration with Kahawatte Plantations and the Dilmah Agricultural Innovation Nucleus. The launch will be marked by the planting of trees, carefully selected to thrive in the local landscape, including species of commercial value for non-timber use. The company aims to contribute to land restoration while protecting against desertification and drought. The project site was chosen following a feasibility analysis utilizing available maps and plantation data, where approximately 1,000 hectares of abandoned land have been identified within Kahawatte Plantations as being suitable for agroforestry. Commercial crops such as Garcinia, Pepper, Durian and Rambutan are among the species to be planted. [link]
The Novo Nordisk Foundation has awarded a grant of up to $21.1 million to non-profit, CIMMYT, for a groundbreaking initiative to mitigate the environmental impact of agriculture, by developing new wheat varieties that are capable of reducing agriculture's nitrogen footprint. As the global population approaches the 10 billion mark, the reliance on fertilizers to boost agricultural production has become an essential, yet environmentally challenging practice, causing severe ecological stress. The leaching of nitrogen into natural ecosystems, coupled with the release of greenhouse gases, is pushing the Earth's environmental limits to a critical threshold. The new grant will fund research associated with biological nitrification inhibition (BNI), which has the potential to reduce nitrogen fertilizer usage by 20%, on average. Rooted in a seed-based genetic strategy, BNI leverages a plant's innate ability to suppress soil nitrification through the release of natural compounds. [link]
Syngenta Group, one of the world’s largest agricultural technology companies, will provide rights to selected genome-editing and breeding technologies for academic research globally, as part of its commitment to foster innovation and drive sustainability in agriculture. The rights to certain intellectual property are related to optimized CRISPR-Cas12a as well as to gene-editing enabled breeding tools. Through CRISPR gene-editing, it is possible to deliver an improved plant that does not include DNA from a different species – more quickly and efficiently than otherwise possible in nature or through conventional breeding methods. Indonesia plans to set up a digital dashboard by August to track its agricultural commodities, its economics ministry said, as the world's top palm oil exporter looks to monitor $6.5 billion worth of products that face a new EU anti-deforestation rule. The dashboard aims to increase the transparency of the supply chain of agriculture commodities such as palm oil, coffee and rubber, and better promote sustainability standards in the country. The ministry hopes to help Indonesian exports navigate the European Union Deforestation-free Regulation (EUDR), set to be implemented at the end of 2024, which will ban imports of commodities linked to deforestation. Argentina is implementing a new certification process to raise climate-friendly beef. Approved earlier this year, the certification is a collaboration between Argentina's National Agricultural Technology Institute, the National Industrial Technology Institute, and the private sector, alongside third-party verification from the International Environmental Product Declaration System. This certification system relies on silvopasture, which involves raising livestock in forests with native grasslands and pastures using agricultural technologies to produce higher forage yields. Asset manager Mirova and the non-profit Rainforest Alliance have signed an agreement to scale up regenerative agriculture and sustainable land use projects across Africa, Latin America and Asia. Mirova, a sustainability-focused unit of French investor Natixis Investment Managers, said funding for the projects would come from its previously announced Mirova Sustainable Land Fund 2 fund, which aims to raise 350 million euros ($381 million). The tie-up comes as policymakers across the world tighten rules governing companies' supply chains as part of efforts to combat climate change and protect and restore biodiversity loss. The fund aims to invest in the equity or debt of 10-20 projects for up to 10 years to give companies time to transition, with the Rainforest Alliance tracking the environmental impact of the projects. More than 400 researchers, academics, entrepreneurs, producers and communicators from Colombia, Mexico, Ecuador, Italy, Honduras and Cuba will participate in the upcoming International Agroforestry Convention Cuba 2024, to be held July 1 to 5. In a press conference, Pedro Pablo Henry Torriente, general director of the Institute of Agroforestry Research (INAF by its Spanish acronym) and president of the Organizing Committee, said that after seven years without being held, the traditional scientific event is back. The event will present results and progress from innovative projects, some with international collaboration, and will learn about the experiences and knowledge of nations that are world leaders in the production of coffee, cocoa and honey. British milk cooperative, First Milk, is inviting the public to its inaugural Festival of Regenerative Farming to celebrate sustainability and connect with nature. The event will take place in multiple locations within Britain during different dates across July and early August. First Milk will demonstrate its climate and biodiversity efforts through engagement activities and displays on-farm and in factories. [link]
Heineken has received its first harvest of barley produced on land where regenerative agricultural practices have been adopted at scale. The brewing giant has worked with farming and food processing cooperative VIVESCIA, based in France, to support hundreds of farmers to adopt more sustainable farming practices. Changes to processes were selected on a science-based basis to deliver co-benefits for soil health, biodiversity, water stewardship, climate impact and climate resilience. [link]

Elanco and dsm-firmenich announced that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has completed its review of Bovaer (3-NOP), a first-in-class methane-reducing feed ingredient, and determined the product meets safety and efficacy requirements for use in lactating dairy cattle. Bovaer works by suppressing the enzyme in the cow’s rumen that forms methane. Feeding one tablespoon of Bovaer per lactating dairy cow per day can reduce methane emissions about 30% annually, while creating opportunity for dairy farmers to be financially rewarded for reducing their dairy’s carbon footprint. Elanco and dsm-firmenich have agreed to expand Elanco’s commercialization of Bovaer across North America. In addition to the U.S., Elanco will also now have the right to market Bovaer in Canada and Mexico, where the product is already available for use in beef and dairy cattle. [link]
Farm machinery companies, DeLaval and John Deere, have co-launched a digital ecosystem to help dairy farmers become more sustainable and efficient. The cloud-based Milk Sustainability Center is a brand-neutral interface that lets producers remotely streamline their operations by monitoring nutrient-use efficiency for nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium and carbon dioxide equivalent. The program can give recommendations to reduce nutrient losses. It also can simulate theoretical scenarios using new technologies or strategies, outputting projected nutrient-use efficiency, carbon footprint and profitability. [link]
Switching food and drink purchases to very similar but more environmentally friendly alternatives could reduce the greenhouse gas emissions from household groceries by more than a quarter (26%), according to a new Australian study from The George Institute for Global Health and Imperial College London published in Nature Food. To make this happen will require on-pack labelling of greenhouse gas emissions for every packaged food product so that consumers can make informed choices. Researchers calculated the projected emissions of annual grocery purchases from 7,000 Australian households using information on ingredients, weights and production life cycles in The George Institute's FoodSwitch database and global environmental impact datasets. More than 22,000 products were assigned to major, minor and sub-categories of foods (e.g. 'bread and bakery', 'bread' and 'white bread', respectively) to quantify emissions saved by switching both within and between groups. A group of researchers from the US, UK, Kenya, Nigeria, and Colombia scrutinized the reliability of the information and professional advice provided by the popular chatbot ChatGPT to farmers in Africa and identified inaccuracies that could lead to agricultural missteps and crop losses. In their article for Nature Food, they caution against the unmediated use of generative AI models in agriculture, fearing that farmers might implement flawed recommendations that could trigger food crises. Instead, the researchers recommend a more optimal development process for AI models in agriculture that includes thorough monitoring and testing before these models are widely implemented. [link]
A new University of Michigan study concludes that nearly half of the food waste, about 620 million metric tons, could be eliminated by fully refrigerated food supply chains worldwide. Sub-Saharan Africa and South and Southeast Asia have the greatest potential for reductions in both food losses and related emissions through increased cold-chain implementation, according to the study. And in many situations, developing more localized, less industrialized "farm-to-table" food supply chains may yield food savings comparable to optimized cold chains. [link]
Opportunities to advance sustainable cotton farming in the United States are growing thanks to a nationwide partnership led by the Soil Health Institute's United States Regenerative Cotton Fund (USRCF). The fund's holistic approach to advance economic insights, soil health measurement, and education has made significant progress in the U.S. Cotton Belt since its establishment, now engaging more than 1,000 cotton farmers and their advisors. Launched in 2021, USRCF is a farmer-facing, science-based initiative to support long-term, sustainable U.S. cotton production, with the goal of eliminating one million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent from the atmosphere by 2026. A new tool developed by scientists at the University of Wisconsin–Madison could help relieve the tension that exists when farmers and landowners decide whether to produce food or energy from their land. Led by Yanhua Xie and Tyler Lark, researchers with the Great Lakes Bioenergy Research Center used machine learning to map nearly 30 million acres of United States cropland abandoned since the 1980s, creating a tool that could guide decisions about how to balance production of energy and food. Their findings, published in the journal Environmental Research Letters, include the most detailed mapping of previously cultivated land in the U.S. to date. Lark, who studies land use change and its impacts on land and water resources, says that understanding could be used to direct clean energy investments where they have the least competition with other beneficial uses. Purdue University and the University of Kentucky are collaborating on a transformative project to expand sustainable maple syrup production. The study will take place in Indiana and Kentucky’s central hardwood region, focusing on sustainable, low-carbon syrup production. The project is directed toward developing a model for “green” maple syrup cooperatives such as energy-efficient production and sustainable forest management. [link]
Research published in this week's Nature says that extensive lab and field trials show that naturally derived bacteria can reduce nitrous oxide emitted off farms into the atmosphere without disrupting other microbes in the soil. The bacteria survived well in soil tests and would be relatively cheap to produce, according to researchers associated with the Norwegian University of Life Sciences. Farmers’ heavy use of nitrogen fertilizer drives up the amount of N2O produced in soil, and in 2022 it accounted for 6% of all U.S. greenhouse gas emissions from human activities, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. The EPA could soon face a lawsuit for not protecting farmers from PFAS “forever chemicals.” Few states regulate PFAS in biosolids fertilizer, but farmers in the northeast are now calling for federal standards. Biosolids are a type of treated sewage byproduct that make a nutrient-rich fertilizer, but PFAS are slipping through the cracks of wastewater treatment and could be contaminating millions of acres of farmland. Sarah Alexander leads the Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association, which filed the notice against the EPA. She said the federal government needs to step up and ensure biosolids are safe. The EPA is expected to release a risk assessment on PFAS in biosolids later this year. [link]

The partnership will facilitate a wide-reaching sustainable farming program that rewards farmers for climate-smart practices and generates scope 3 insets. It aims to help Ukraine’s agricultural communities adopt regenerative practices by incentivizing farmers to grow resilient crops while offering them access to new profit opportunities via scope 3 insets. China's flagship food group COFCO International landed its first cargo of deforestation-free soybeans for domestic use on May 31, marking what industry players say is a milestone for a country that has prioritized price over sustainability in its farm imports. China is a top buyer of agricultural goods, including soybeans and beef, which are drivers of global deforestation, but has lagged western peers in demanding that produce including palm oil not be sourced from land linked to deforestation or conversion of natural habitats. That is slowly changing, with state-run COFCO International as well as China Mengniu Dairy Company and Inner Mongolia Yili Industrial Group in the past year asking suppliers and consultants for sustainable soybeans, traders and sustainability experts told Reuters. The G20 agriculture leaders convened to address critical issues of food security and the adaptation of agricultural systems to climate change, with the shared goal of ensuring a more equitable and hunger-free future for generations to come. More than 5 million large farmland trees vanished between 2018 and 2022 in India, partly due to altered cultivation practices, revealing a “concerning trajectory,” new research published in the journal Nature Sustainability has found. Researchers said that “an observable trend was emerging” wherein agroforestry systems are being replaced with paddy rice fields. The team, including researchers from the University of Copenhagen, Denmark, explained that the decision to remove trees is often driven by perceived low benefits of the trees, coupled with concerns that their shading effect may adversely affect crop yields. About 100 Riverside, California middle school students recently learned about the importance of sustainable food production through hands-on activities with UC Riverside scientists. Students met with agricultural scientists and volunteers, worked on plant experiments, and saw how insects and microorganisms can cause plant damage or be used to recycle food waste. Organizers hope to acquire outside funding to continue annual outreach events and agricultural sustainability courses for middle, high school, and university students. [link]
After a successful first year, The Future Farmer Program from Tesco and Harper Adams University's School of Sustainable Food and Farming, has announced that there is a further 75 places up for grabs, and are calling on young up-and-coming UK farmers to join the second year of the program. Starting in September 2024, the program is aimed at farmers aged 40 and under who are interested in boosting their sustainable agriculture skills. The first cohort completed a nine-month program of activities based on practical learning, and those farmers are now preparing to complete their course following a 'Walk the Supply Chain' event, held in the West Midlands countryside, whereby participants can visit AB Food Group, a leading European food processor, Sansaw Estate, a progressive dairy, and Halfpenny Green Vineyard, a farm-to-fork enterprise. ADM and its global regenerative agriculture program were named a finalist in the Enterprise category of Fast Company's 2024 World Changing Ideas Awards. In 2023, ADM delivered more than 2.8 million regenerative acres, exceeding its 2-million-acre goal, partnering with more than 28,000 growers of corn, soybeans, wheat, peanuts, cotton, sorghum, canola and barley as it expanded its regenerative agriculture efforts to new regions, including the launch of programs in Europe and Latin America. ADM connects these climate-smart producers with downstream CPG brands such as PepsiCo, Nestle, and Carlsberg to help them create more sustainably sourced products and reduce their Scope 3 emissions. Dr. Robert “Bob” Quinn, founder of Kamut International, has announced the launch of the Quinn Institute, a “research and demonstration hub designed to foster the evolution of regenerative organic agriculture and a place-based approach to solving the national food and health crisis.” The Institute aims to serve five pillars of system change in the United States: 1) creating a partnered environment and building community engagement, 2) advancing science that promotes food as medicine, 3) leading place-based agriculture research and the practice of regenerative organic agriculture, 4) understanding and promoting solutions that regenerative organic agriculture can bring to bear for mediating climate change, and 5) using a regional approach with far-reaching national and global implications. The Ministry of Environment in Rwanda has launched an $18 million (approximately Rwf23 billion) project to restore degraded land and forests in Southern and Northern provinces from 2024 to 2028. The project will focus on landscape restoration activities such as soil erosion control, agroforestry, and community adaptive skills for agro-forestry development. Soil erosion control will be carried out on 1,000 hectares with terraces while agro-forestry trees including fruit trees will be planted on 80,000 hectares. Nearly 10,000 improved cook stoves will be disseminated to farmers' households to decrease pressure on trees. [link]
Plants adapt genetically over time to the special conditions of organic farming, demonstrated in a long-term study conducted at the University of Bonn. Barley plants were cultivated in two adjacent fields by the researchers, employing conventional farming practices in one and organic methods in the other. Throughout a span exceeding 20 years, the organic barley underwent enrichment with distinct genetic traits divergent from those of the control group. Among the findings, it highlights the significance of cultivating varieties tailored specifically for organic agricultural practices. These outcomes have been recently disseminated in the journal Agronomy for Sustainable Development. [link]
Syngenta Group and The Nature Conservancy have renewed their successful collaboration that links conservation goals with economic potential and addresses societal issues like deforestation and land degradation. The two partners have been collaborating since 2009 and entered into a global collaboration in 2018. This year's extension will focus on five strategic projects around the globe, to include an ambitious target to recover over 300,000 hectares of degraded land in Cerrado Brazil while also regenerating agricultural soils in China. A study recently published in the journal Nature compared the impact of organic and conventional food production using eight environmental health indicators and found that organic food has a significantly lower environmental impact than conventional food production for six of the eight indicators. For the analysis, scientists reviewed 100 different “life cycle assessments” (LCA) of organic and conventionally grown food products from cradle-to-farm gate. The results—that organic food production is less impactful on the environment—add to the robust body of research that underscores the importance of organic farming to the development of a sustainable global food system while addressing climate change. U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) in partnership with CIFOR-ICRAF and other partners has announced the establishment of the Regenerative Agriculture for the Conservation of the Amazon (ARCA) program. The program will invest $17.8 million to support actions aiming at reducing the causes of deforestation and degradation, greenhouse gas emissions and biodiversity loss through the promotion of rural development, support to public policies, training and scientific studies focusing on the development and implementation of agroforestry systems in Brazil. The UK's Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (Defra) has announced the expansion of an "improved" Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) for farmers, containing 102 sustainability-led actions that can be paid for by the government. The much-maligned SFI replaced EU farm subsidies and will be open to new entrants for the first time, including more than 20 new options to support more sustainable food production. Payments will now be made to farmers for actions including precision farming and agroforestry, while there is also a new and expanded offer for upland farmers and more actions for tenants on short-term contracts. In addition, further new actions would support flood preparedness, helping businesses to become more resilient to the changing climate and challenging weather conditions. [link]
McCain Foods has joined forces with BNP Paribas Bank Polska to launch a new regenerative agriculture program in Poland, built on a transition package to support potato growers on their sustainability journey. McCain is supporting Polish potato farmers in their transition to more sustainable agriculture practices, with a range of actions including technical, commercial and financial support. [link]

Michigan State University is working on a three-year study to evaluate bloom prediction, pest control, and late-season crop management strategies for apples, blueberries, cherries, and grapes across the state, in an effort to combat new climate-related farming challenges. Four newly funded research projects will receive about $1.25 million over three years through a new partnership among MSU, the Michigan Plant Coalition, and the state Department of Agriculture and Rural Development. The state of Michigan provided a one-time $5 million budget this year for these competitive grants. Results of all four studies will be shared with growers across the state through the MSU Extension program. [link]
UK supermarket chain, Waitrose, announced its commitment to support more than 2,000 British farmers moving to nature-friendly farming practices. Waitrose recently held a farming conference with more than 300 of its farmers and suppliers, in response to an industry-wide need to move towards more resilient farming methods amid greater demand from Waitrose customers. Key parts of the Waitrose plan include collaborations with LEAF (Linking Environment And Farming) and the University of Reading. The company is rolling out its LEAF certification globally to all fresh produce growers by 2026. LEAF has also developed written advice for farmers covering four crucial categories - soil, carbon, biodiversity and water. The plan also includes setting up eight satellite farms in the UK on a three-year program representing a range of farming sectors including beef, dairy, pig, poultry, top and soft fruit, root vegetables and glasshouse, with an aim to produce best practice guidance to share more widely in its supply chains. A farmer in Canada has partnered with Brock University to analyze the effectiveness of wool as a soil amendment. Jennifer Osborn and her company, EcoWool Canada, believes that wool pellets could act as a natural fertilizer to improve soil health, fertility, and crop performance. Research shows wool contains carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen and sulfur, which are among the elements that boost soil quality. Wool provides further benefit by aerating the soil, retaining moisture, improving water infiltration and reducing erosion. To test EcoWool’s wool pellets, Brock University is growing spinach, sweet peppers, marigolds, basil and yellow beans in pots containing either wool pellets, conventional fertilizers or nothing added to the soil at all. The work is being supported by the Government of Canada. [link]
Up to 10,000 smallholder coffee farmers in the Gusii region of Kenya are poised to benefit from training on crop diversification to maximize crop production in the highly populated area through a project dubbed Gusii Regenerative Agriculture Landscape (GuRAL). The project is supported by an international non-profit organization, Rainforest Alliance, and has undertaken a three-day training of exercises to equip a section of the farmers with knowledge and skills on how to improve production and maximize profits. The regenerative agriculture practices aim to create healthy and productive farms while restoring fragile ecosystems and boosting farmer incomes in the area. [link]
Plant-based meat company, Beyond Meat, Inc., is pivoting towards messaging based on health as it continues to bleed red ink in a challenging sales environment. Over the past three years the company has worked with groups like the American Diabetes Association, the American Heart Association and the Clean Label Project to ensure their products meet each group’s criteria for endorsement. Beyond Meat’s management team believes marketing messages focused on the nutrition profile of its products will provide a point of differentiation in the market. [link]
Non-profit, WWF, supported by funding from the climate-positive foundation Laudes Foundation, has launched the Regenerative Production Landscape Collaborative (RPLC) Pakistan to develop holistic solutions for smallholder farmers' challenges while addressing environmental issues caused by unsustainable practices. This work follows previous success in India, Brazil, and Tanzania on similar projects. RPLC has been described as an innovative jurisdictional model to foster agricultural ecosystems which conserve and enhance natural resources and build community resilience whilst enabling businesses to source responsibly. The collaborative aims to cover over 1 million hectares and 300,000 farmers globally, with Pakistan expected to contribute over 100,000 hectares and 50,000 farmers towards this goal. [link]
Retailer Lidl has announced the launch of a sustainability program for beef suppliers, which will see the supermarket chain partner with Liffey Meats and over 20 beef farmers around Ireland. The Lidl Sustainable Beef Program will see the retailer, Liffey Meats and Bord Bia working to implement “sustainable farming practices” to reduce carbon emissions from beef farming, Lidl said. The results of the program will be measured through AgNav, which is a software developed by Teagasc, Bord Bia and the Irish Cattle Breeding Federation (ICBF) to help farmers implement and monitor sustainable farming practices. Kraft Heinz is looking to sell Oscar Mayer, the big maker of hot dogs, cold cuts and bacon. It recently tapped Bank of America and Centerview Partners to gauge interest in the business, which could fetch something in the neighborhood of $3 billion to $5 billion. Under new Chief Executive Carlos Abrams-Rivera, Kraft Heinz is working to rejigger its portfolio as consumer interest in health and nutrition grows. Kraft Heinz is in the midst of a multiyear effort to improve the nutrition of supermarket staples such as its ketchup and juice drinks, aiming to offer healthier options amid rising concern over ultra-processed foods, obesity and chronic diseases linked to diet. A local group is calling on America’s largest berry grower to cease the use of pesticides on farm fields located near schools. The Campaign for Organic & Regenerative Agriculture (CORA) will hold a press conference and community gathering on May 21 to ask Driscoll’s to change the way the company applies pesticides to its crops. According to former farmer and CORA member Woody Rehanek, there are about 50 conventional and 15 organic farms within a quarter-mile miles of several local schools. [link]
A Purdue University interdisciplinary team is establishing a network of organic farmers to improve soil health. The effort will formalize the Indiana Organic Network (ION) as part of a statewide initiative to assess soil health at regional and farm scales. The project is supported by a grant of nearly $1 million from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture. ION is intended to assist certified organic farms and farms that are going through the USDA-mandated transition process.

USDA-certified Organic, 100% grass-fed beef company, Spring Lake Ranch, is working with EarthOptics and Merge Impact (MI) to get third-party insight on its regenerative agriculture program, build credibility for its brand and educate the industry on the benefits of regenerative agriculture. Spring Lake Ranch said that the term “regenerative” is gaining in popularity in the meat industry, but the brand wants to prove the benefits through science and quantifiable data. EarthOptics will assess all three of Spring Lake Ranch’s diverse ecosystems across its ranch — Meadowlands, Uplands (Sandhills), and Choppy Sands — and create baseline measurements of key environmental improvement indicators, including the following: carbon sequestration, soil organic matter, soil temperatures, species diversity (above and below ground), functional group diversity, canopy heights. The solar storm that caused the northern lights to erupt in the nighttime skies over Iowa, shimmering in waves of reds, greens, purples, pinks and blues, disrupted satellite connections to global positioning systems that guide planting tractors and played havoc with farmers planting during the early part of the week. Farmers reported losing their GPS signals continuously as they went out into fields. This compounded problems for farmers that have been waiting to plant in the face of frequent rainstorms this spring. [link]
Despite overall satisfaction with their diets, rural and urban consumers are divided on agriculture's role in climate change and the health attributes of various products like plant-based milk, Purdue University shared in its latest research. Purdue University surveyed more than 1,200 rural and urban consumers about their perception of several food and beverage claims and where they shop the most. The majority of consumers (87%) are rather or very happy with their diets, up from 81% in January 2024. However, almost half (49%) of urban consumers said agriculture is a significant contributor to climate change compared to 40% of rural consumers. Similarly, half of urban consumers said eating less meat is better for the environment compared to 38% of rural shoppers. [link]
Noble Research Institute, the nation’s largest nonprofit agricultural research organization, has been given a 2024 Regenerative Agriculture Research Grant from the Greenacres Foundation to advance its ongoing pecan-focused research. The $295,000 grant was awarded to aid the organization’s study of pecan silvopasture and measuring improved soil health’s impact on building profitable and resilient systems. In line with Noble’s goal of regenerating 164 million acres of U.S. grazing land by 2040, this three-year project will contribute to the continuing research focused on the impact of implementing regenerative practices for achieving a balanced and resilient ecosystem. Regenerative agroforestry nonprofit and United Nations World Restoration Flagship Trees for the Future (TREES) is celebrating a land restoration milestone this week – 350 million trees planted around the world. Local TREES staff train farmers in a regenerative agroforestry technique called the Forest Garden Approach. Farmers grow trees from seed on their own land and plant them strategically to protect the land and support the farming family. Founded in 1989, TREES staff have worked around the globe. Today, TREES staff train farmers in sub-Saharan Africa. The average Forest Garden is made up of 2,500 – 4,000 trees to restore and protect the land and dozens of food and resource crops for the family to eat and sell. [link]
Pennsylvania State Agriculture Secretary Russell Redding visited Stroud Water Research Center for a first-hand look at research measuring the effects of farming practices that are improving water quality and soil health. Redding and local farmer, Jamie Hicks, were joined by the Stroud Center’s Executive Director, Dr. Dave Arscott, and Director of Watershed Restoration, Matthew Ehrhart, as they toured a field managed by Hicks, and discussed a new $1.5 million funding opportunity that will further conservation research to develop innovative solutions that farmers can implement to address complex challenges like climate change and loss of critical water and soil resources. This increased research funding, coupled with Governor Shapiro’s proposed $10 million Agriculture Innovation Fund will keep Pennsylvania researchers on the cutting edge of exciting developments in conservation and regenerative agriculture. The Federal Government in Australia has announced new grant funding for farmers to tackle sustainable agriculture at the grassroots level. In a statement, Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry Murray Watt said the Climate-Smart Agriculture Program Small Grants are designed for individuals as well as farming, community and Indigenous groups to lead on-ground projects. Funding comes from the Natural Heritage, the Federal Government’s key investment platform for achieving its natural resource management, sustainable agriculture and environmental protection outcomes. Starting in 2023-24, the Climate-Smart Agriculture Program is penciled in to allocate $302.1 million over five years. [link]
Australian Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry Minister Murray Watt will bring together more than 150 stakeholders for high-level conversations about how to de-carbonize the agriculture industry. Farmers, peak agricultural lobby groups, researchers, environmental groups, energy experts and senior departmental staff from around the country will converge on the Darling Downs in late May to discuss how the sector can meet its own climate goals. The summit will be a chance for industry to discuss the Ag and Land Sector Decarbonization Plan, one of six such plans for various industry sectors under the government’s Net Zero 2050 Plan, forming part of the overall consultation process for the climate abatement agenda. ADM announced that its global regenerative agriculture program expanded to more than 2.8 million acres in 2023, exceeding its 2 million acre goal. In addition, the company announced that it is targeting 3.5 million regenerative acres in 2024 and is increasing its 2025 goal from 4 million to 5 million acres globally. ADM partnered with more than 28,000 growers of corn, soybeans, wheat, peanuts, cotton, sorghum, canola and barley in 2023 as it expanded its regenerative agriculture efforts globally, including the launch of new programs in Europe and Latin America. Participating farms again saw improvements in soil health and carbon footprint. ADM defines regenerative agriculture as an outcome-based farming approach that protects and improves soil health, biodiversity, climate and water resources while supporting farming business development. As part of the government’s quest to improve American eating habits, the Food and Drug Administration is considering requiring food manufacturers to put new labels on the front of packages. The labels might flag certain health risks, such as high levels of salt, sugar or saturated fat. The FDA is still weighing its approach, with an aim to propose its rule on labeling this summer. The agency hopes that clearer food labeling could help people make healthier choices as it tackles the rise of diet-related health problems such as Type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. One label idea the FDA has tested uses red, yellow and green to convey whether products are high, medium or low in added sugar, sodium and saturated fat. Other potential labels that the FDA has shared state how much of those substances a product contains per serving. [link]
An innovative Scottish firm is harnessing the superpowers of the underground fungal kingdom to revolutionize tree-planting efforts at home and abroad, with a mission to help reforest the earth. Rhizocore, based on the outskirts of Edinburgh, creates bespoke ‘fungi bombs’ – or Rhizopellets – which are hand-crafted to contain the optimum mix of mycorrhiza for a particular site and the trees which will be grown there. Mycorrhiza connects the roots of trees and other plants in the habitat in a mutually beneficial arrangement that allows nutrients and water to be exchanged. [link]

A grant offering $3 million in funding is available for farmers in California looking to improve their soil health. The Central Sierra Healthy Soils program provides free technical assistance and financial resources and is available to small agriculture producers and family farms in eight counties: Nevada, Placer, El Dorado, Amador, Alpine, Calaveras, Tuolumne and Sacramento. The hope is to fund about 50 projects over four years. [link]
Four research and outreach projects have been funded through the new Agricultural Climate Resiliency Program, a partnership among Michigan State University, the Michigan Plant Coalition, and the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development. The program, which began in 2024 and is administered by MSU AgBioResearch and MSU Extension, was created to address long-term climate- and water-related challenges in plant agriculture. Overall, research will examine topics such as plant and soil health, carbon sequestration, efficient use of water and protection of water resources. Results will be shared with growers across the state through MSU Extension. In 2024, the State of Michigan provided a one-time $5 million allocation for a competitive grants program, which supports each of the four new projects at roughly $1.25 million over three years. The growing consumer demand for organic and sustainably produced food items has resulted in increased scrutiny of pesticide residues and stringent organic certification requirements, which in turn is creating solid anticipated growth prospects for the pesticide detection market. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration said this week that it had detected viral particles of H5N1 avian influenza in milk purchased at grocery stores, but the agency says it still believes that the milk is safe to drink. In an update about an ongoing outbreak of bird flu in cattle, the FDA noted that it believes the viral particles were detected by highly sensitive lab tests and are likely to have been remnants of viruses killed during the pasteurization process. The agency said that it does not think it is likely that the particles would be able to infect people but it is conducting additional tests to be completely sure. [link]
Ugg has reached its goal to support one million acres of grasslands across 80 sheep farms in Australia. The milestone comes a year ahead of schedule and only four years after the brand established a long-term partnership with Land to Market and Savory Institute to support regenerative agriculture. The partnership started in 2021 when Ugg established a $3.3 million grant with the Savory Institute. The grants were used to develop programs that work to protect and reverse environmental degradation through agriculture aimed at restoring soil, encouraging wildlife diversity, capturing carbon in the ground, and improving land health for future generations. A workshop was organized by the office of the Meghalaya Basin Management Agency (MBMA) in India this week, recognizing the need for innovation and revitalization of agroforestry in a region that has long adopted only traditional farming methods. The workshop titled “Reimagining Agroforestry in Meghalaya: The Need for Strengthening and Rethinking” was jointly organized by the Centre of Excellence, the Community-led Landscape Management Project (CLLMP), IORA, and the Government Innovation Lab (SCEP). In addition to identifying the best sustainable agroforestry models across diverse agro-climatic regions of Meghalaya, the workshop dwelt on integrating optimal tree growing and agricultural practices, exploring strategies to enhance existing plantations/agroforestry models or develop new ones, fostering cross-department collaboration to create a stakeholder ecosystem for expanding the benefits of carbon finance through agroforestry, and outlining the requisite support needed for successful agroforestry implementation in Meghalaya. Governor Kathy Hochul of New York announced that as part of record funding being invested in the State’s agricultural stewardship programs, $28.75 million is now available for on-farm projects through the Climate Resilient Farming grant program. Round 8 of CRF provides critical funding that helps New York’s farmers reduce greenhouse gas emissions, protect water, ensure soil health, and increase on-farm resiliency to the effects of a changing climate. Under the Governor’s leadership, the Fiscal Year 2025 Budget provides $81.8 million through the Environmental Protection Fund, up $4 million from last year, for agricultural programs and initiatives, such as Climate Resilient Farming grant, that are helping farms to implement environmentally sustainable practices and combat climate change. The U.S. Department of Agriculture, wanting to limit the spread of highly pathogenic H5N1 avian influenza, announced that it has mandated testing of HPAI for interstate movement of dairy cattle. The Federal Order becomes effective April 29. Before interstate movement, dairy cattle must receive a negative test for influenza A virus at an approved National Animal Health Laboratory Network (NAHLN) laboratory. Owners of herds in which dairy cattle test positive for interstate movement will be required to provide epidemiological information, including animal movement tracing. The steps immediately become required for lactating dairy cattle. The requirements for other classes of dairy cattle will be based on scientific factors concerning the virus and its evolving risk profile. [link]
Barry Callebaut, the world's largest chocolate supplier, has launched the Future Farming Initiative (FFI) to build a high-tech and sustainable cocoa farming business under the leadership of Steven Retzlaff, president of Global Cocoa. The group will establish the investment company, FFI, which will be wholly owned by Barry Callebaut, and develop technology and R&D capabilities to be scaled. Barry Callebaut said that FFI intends to be a catalyst for others to invest in farming and create partnerships with farmers to modernize sustainable cocoa farming at scale. [link]
The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) announced the launch of a new action-oriented, country-focused initiative to reduce the need for antimicrobials on farms, amid the growing threat posed by Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) in the food and agriculture sector, impacting terrestrial and aquatic animal health, plants and the environment and causing significant economic losses to farmers across the globe. The initiative aims to provide countries with policy support, technical assistance, capacity building, and knowledge sharing to help reduce the need for antimicrobials in livestock production, prioritizing animal health and welfare, mitigating environmental impact, and enhancing food security and nutrition, thus helping to achieve the 2030 Agenda and its Sustainable Development Goals. Working together with governments, farmers, private sector and civil society organizations and other actors, it will promote the “5 Gs” at the farm level: Good Health Services, Good Production Practices, Good Alternatives, Good Connections, and Good Incentives. In a landmark collaboration, the U.S. National Science Foundation and the U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Institute of Food and Agriculture (USDA NIFA) are teaming up to advance foundational research in agricultural robotics. The agencies are issuing a new Dear Colleague Letter to solicit visionary research proposals to develop robots with the potential to revolutionize farming practices. The collaboration stems from a shared recognition of the critical role that robotics can play in addressing challenges in agriculture and food production, such as increased demand for food and the need for precision agriculture practices. By leveraging resources from both agencies, NSF and USDA seek to foster interdisciplinary research that will tackle agricultural challenges and increase sustainability. [link]

The California Farm Bureau has announced it is making $5 million available for citrus growers to implement health-soils practices, while Congress is providing an extra $1.5 million for breeding research. The funding was made possible after the state Department of Food and Agriculture awarded money from the Healthy Soils Program Block Grant to the California Bountiful Foundation, the California Citrus Quality Council and Xerces Society. Grants of up to $200,000 are offered to growers for farm projects such as cover cropping, nutrient management and pollinator-friendly hedgerow plants, the CFB explained. The program is set to support 20 to 45 projects over three years. [link]
The Connecticut Department of Agriculture (CT DoAg) is awarding $1.475 million in state funding to farmers and non-profits involved in production agriculture to invest in long-term climate resiliency projects which will decrease vulnerability to extreme weather events through regenerative agricultural practices. The 20 funded projects are part of the Farmland Restoration, Climate Resiliency and Preparedness Grant, which was authorized by and funded through Connecticut General Statues 22-6c with a focus on restoring and improving land with prime and important farmland soils. Funds can be used for capital investments, including equipment, to implement farming practices that will have a multi-year or cumulative effect on the climate resiliency of the land or farming operation. Awardees will be provided technical assistance by a soil scientist or other advisor assigned by and paid for by CT DoAg and will receive funding to implement the FRCR Plan. [link]
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) released the Inventory of U.S. Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Sinks: 1990-2022, showing that American agriculture reduced emissions by almost 2% from 2021 to 2022, the largest decrease of any economic sector. Other highlights specific to the agricultural sector include: 12-million-metric-ton reduction in greenhouse gas emissions; 2.1% reduction in livestock GHG emissions; 1.7% reduction in crop cultivation emissions; and 1.2% reduction in fuel combustion emissions. Nestlé Purina is investing in farmer adoption of regenerative agriculture practices across the company’s corn and soy supply chains through a new partnership with Cargill. This work will support soil health and reduce the carbon footprint for Purina dry pet food products across North America, contributing to a more sustainable future for people and their pets. The partnership is expected to support the adoption of regenerative agriculture practices across more than 200,000 acres of corn and soy farmland in the Midwest and is estimated to reduce the carbon footprint of the Purina grain supply from Cargill by up to 40 percent over the next three years. For the first time, California water regulators are cracking down on one of the state’s major farming regions for failing to take steps to curb growers’ excessive groundwater pumping, which has sent water levels into rapid decline and is causing the land to sink. The State Water Resources Control Board voted unanimously this week to place the Tulare Lake basin on “probationary” status for failing to adopt sufficient measures to address chronic overpumping. Falling groundwater levels have caused the ground to sink as much as 6 feet in parts of the area over the last decade, and state officials have determined that a local plan for managing groundwater would allow the free fall to continue. They say that without stronger measures, hundreds of household wells are at risk of running dry. It’s the first time California officials have used their authority to intervene in a community to force stronger measures to rein in the depletion of groundwater, as required under the state’s decade-old Sustainable Groundwater Management Act, known as SGMA. The State Bank of Vietnam announced that more than 15 trillion Vietnamese dong ($597 million) has been disbursed under a credit scheme to support Vietnamese agroforestry and aquatic sectors since July last year. The loans, with interest rates lower than market rates by 1 percent to 2 percent annually, have been designed to help the sectors cope with and overcome difficulties experienced during this turbulent period. Dao Minh Tu, the bank's deputy governor, said the central bank was willing to increase the amount to over 30 trillion dong ($1.2 billion) if there is strong demand within the sectors. [link]

Iowa State University will host Sarah Castle from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, on its Iowa Learning Farms (ILF) conservation webinar April 24 to discuss agroforestry on Midwest farms. Castle’s research focuses on advancing knowledge of agroforestry systems, including silvopasture, windbreaks, riparian buffers and alley cropping. Through her work, she aims to illuminate spatial targeting opportunities for agroforestry, understand its potential contributions to conservation and profitability, and examine the broader policy implications to support the adoption of these practices. Newly awarded grant funding through the federal Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) is boosting support for agroforestry-related projects in Hawaii addressing diverse aspects of urban and community forestry. The Kaulunani Urban and Community Forestry Program, part of the Department of Land and Natural Resources' Division of Forestry and Wildlife (DOFAW), will support three-year projects centered on community tree nurseries, urban forest management plans, intergenerational food forests, new public green spaces, and more, across the state. Hellmann’s has launched a “Save Our Sandwiches” (S.O.S.) campaign to spread awareness around regenerative farming practices for growing crops like soybeans, a key ingredient in its mayonnaise product, which is often added to sandwiches. The effort connects soil erosion to the looming “extinction” of four sandwiches often filled with mayo — the BLT, turkey club, Italian sub and egg salad — and includes a microsite that doles out coupons and plushie sandwiches. Campaign print and digital out-of-home (OOH) ads mourn the looming “death date” of mayonnaise and the sandwiches it compliments. The County of Kaua‘i’s Office of Economic Development in Hawaii has announced the recipients of its Agriculture Farm Expansion Grants (AFEG) for Fiscal Year 2023-2024. This is the first year that the county offered funding for AFEG with the intent to advance Kaua‘i’s agricultural industry through targeted investments in the expansion of farming across the island. A selection committee reviewed and scored all the eligible projects and funded (partially or fully) nine proposals for a total of $429,843. The list of projects includes expanding local organic crops, composting, agroforestry nursery operations, farm equipment, and more. [link]
Southern blight is a deadly soilborne diseases that infects more than 500 plant species worldwide, including in the southern United States. It is increasingly creeping northward and starting to affect apple production in Pennsylvania. The causal organism, Sclerotium (Athelia) rolfsiii, is a fungus that affects the lower part of the tree, killing roots and girdling trees. It most commonly affects young apple trees less than three years old. Chances are that the disease has been present in Pennsylvania soils for a while, however climactic conditions have not been favorable for the fungus until recently. [link]
More than $1.1 million has been awarded to eight organizations to implement key environmental education initiatives in their local communities, under the New South Wales (NSW), Australia Environmental Trust's Environmental Education Grants Program. The Environmental Education program supports projects that help communities to learn, acquire new skills, and be inspired to act in ways that are good for the environment. New York-based controlled environment agriculture company, Square Roots, has unveiled a program that aims to remove lighting from commercial indoor vertical farming systems to reduce energy demands and costs. Through partnerships and focused research, the company says it is exploring techniques like heterotrophic growing to operate indoor farms in the dark, with the goal of lower production costs and environmental impact while maintaining year-round fresh food production. The program seeks to demonstrate that light can be removed from a commercial indoor vertical farming system; the benefits of indoor farming remain, but the system can now operate with radically reduced energy needs. This translates directly to significantly lower production costs and associated carbon dioxide equivalent, or CO2e. [link]
Applegate, a leading natural and organic meat brand, has announced a new partnership with American Farmland Trust in the form of a $50,000 donation to the Brighter Future Fund, a program that helps farmers and ranchers nationwide improve the protection of their farmland together with the adoption of regenerative agricultural practices. Applegate's donation will fund grants, valued up to $5,000, for livestock farmers or ranchers who are working to become more resilient and viable. [link]
The Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) announced that it has decided to allow the use of environmental attribute certificates like carbon offsets for abatement purposes on the Scope 3 emissions of corporations, reversing a long-standing position against their usage. SBTi considers this step a way to accelerate the decarbonization of value chains with compensation logic while companies make their way to eliminate carbon emissions at the root through innovation and technology improvements. As part of the Standard revision process, a first draft of basic rules, thresholds, and guardrails for the potential use of environmental attribute certificates for abatement purposes of Scope 3 emissions will be issued by SBTi by July 2024. The UN International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and the Land Conservation Organization (OCT) unveiled the new CompensaAÇÃO (CompensACTION) project: Promotion of Payment for Environmental Services (PES) for deforestation-free supply chains in Brazil. CompensAÇÃO will be a joint investment of US$4.9 million by IFAD and the Republic of Germany and will be implemented in the Atlantic Forest biome, one of the areas most threatened by deforestation in the world. The main objective of CompensAÇÃO is to create the conditions for promoting agroforestry transition in cocoa production areas. Payment to producers for ecosystem services will take the form of materials for reforestation and cash compensation. [link]
Food security and biodiversity are both helped by diversified farming techniques, with little negative impact, according to a new paper that includes research from two Washington State University professors. In one study across 30 different locations in four states, researchers found that the more complex and diverse a farm, the wider the diversity of wild birds it supported, and that the birds were a net positive for the farms. Another study reviewed trees on farms showing that food security was enhanced due to trees providing food and income sources for farmers themselves, while maintaining yields of legacy crops in the production system. Kirin Holdings and its subsidiary, Kirin Beverage, have entered a partnership with the Rainforest Alliance on a project to develop and pilot a regenerative agriculture tea framework, “The Regenerative Tea Scorecard.” The Regenerative Tea Scorecard is based on the Rainforest Alliance’s definition of regenerative agriculture, which takes a conservation and restoration approach to farming by combining environmentally friendly farming practices with integrated systems management strategies to ensure soil health, on-farm biodiversity conservation, ecosystem restoration, and improved farmer livelihoods. The Scorecard is intended to be a tool that farmers and companies can use voluntarily and easily to support tea farms in their transition to regenerative farming. The project will begin in some tea plantations in Sri Lanka, the main producer of the tea leaves used in Kirin Gogo-no-Kocha, and a pilot test is scheduled for 2024. [link]
Hoping to cash in on $4.6 billion in federal grants from the Inflation Reduction Act, the state of Nebraska has put together its first ever Priority Climate Action Plan. Agriculture is a major focus in the plan. Although agriculture contributes to 10% of emissions nationwide, it is a larger part of the economy in Nebraska and therefore a bigger part of the greenhouse gas emissions at 42% of the total in 2021, according to the plan. The climate action plan sets the goal of reducing the amount of carbon Nebraska emits to the atmosphere by 25.7 million metric tons by 2030, with 86% of the cut coming from agriculture. To get to that goal, encouraging farmers to use more regenerative practices and precision equipment is one focus. The plan proposes to create a carbon intensity score registry that would help measure the impact those farming practices are having. [link]
Retail co-op PCC Community Markets recently hosted PCC’s Convening on Regenerative and Organic Food Systems, wherein the retailer worked with roughly 85 food system leaders representing 55 organizations to consider the next steps for regenerative agriculture. The event addressed issues facing growers, producers, and retail outlets that distribute regeneratively-grown crops. PCC said that regenerative agriculture is inconsistently defined and as a result, it and other retailers have seen a spike in unverifiable claims that products are regenerative or produced via regenerative agricultural practices. The lack of industrywide standards means an increasing risk that unverified claims will undermine the integrity of organics or lead to greenwashed marketing and misled consumers, said PCC. [link]
Woolworths grocery chain in New Zealand said that its suppliers are increasingly using drones amid a push for regenerative agriculture and water conservation. Specifically, the group’s suppliers are using drone technology to identify plants under stress, allowing farmers to make data-driven decisions and conserve water resources. Farmers can monitor the health of crops and detect signs of strain by utilizing drones with advanced sensors, allowing for targeted irrigation and resource management. [link]

Anthropologie has forged a partnership with Kiss the Ground, a nonprofit promoting regeneration and healthy soil as a viable solution to the wellness, water and climate crisis. Kicking off Earth Month, Anthropologie hopes to improve awareness, education and engagement around regenerative agriculture and how it contributes to a healthier planet. Anthropologie and Kiss the Ground will work together to generate awareness and involvement through collaborative programming. Through the partnership, Anthropologie has committed to an annual donation of $100,000 to Kiss the Ground, as well as offering their customers the opportunity to contribute through roundup at checkout donations in all Anthropologie stores worldwide throughout April. Anthropologie will also introduce its first regenerative cotton capsule collection. The line will reimagine existing customer favorites, now made with third-party certified regenerative cotton. A person in Texas tested positive for avian influenza after exposure to dairy cattle presumed to be infected with the H5N1 bird flu, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said this week. The case marks the second known instance that a person in the U.S. has been infected with H5N1 bird flu. The person reported eye redness, or conjunctivitis, as their only symptom and is being treated with an antiviral drug. The U.S. Agriculture Department reported the avian influenza in dairy cows in Texas and Kansas in late March this year. Unpasteurized milk from sick cattle at two dairy farms in Kansas and one in Texas, as well as a throat swab from a cow in Texas, tested positive for the same strain of the virus that is currently widespread among birds. Twenty members of the U.S. House of Representatives wrote a letter to House Agriculture Committee Leadership urging them to include a voluntary crop insurance premium incentive program for farmers who plant cover crops in the upcoming Farm Bill. The lawmakers note that drought, rain, and extreme weather have stressed America’s soils and crop insurance payments have risen more than 400% for drought-related losses, and nearly 300% for rain and flooding-related losses between 1995 and 2020. Without mitigating actions, climate change will continue to exacerbate losses and the cost of the Federal Crop Insurance Program (FCIP) could increase anywhere from 10 to 37%. Cover crops are a solution to help farmers mitigate risk. A 2023 study found that higher cover-crop adoption led to lower levels of crop insurance losses due to prevented planting. Another study found that just a 1% increase in cover crop adoption led to nearly $40 million in savings. [link]
New research from Curtin University underscores how rising temperatures threaten to turn Australia’s soil into a net carbon emitter, exacerbating the climate crisis. As temperatures increase, the ability of Australia's soil to continue holding carbon diminishes. Additionally, under certain conditions, it can even begin to release stored carbon back into the atmosphere. Professor Raphael Viscarra Rossel and his team at Curtin University estimate that under a "middle of the road" emissions scenario, soil emissions in Australia could contribute over 14% of the country's total emissions by 2045, increasing significantly more by 2100. This is particularly critical in sensitive coastal areas and the nation’s extensive rangelands, which hold an estimated 70% of the country’s soil carbon reserves. [link]
Nestlé has launched a key environmental performance improvement drive, aiming to deliver two new products alongside suppliers Cargill and development group, ETG | Beyond Beans, as part of existing net zero 2050 commitments. The new five-year initiative is tasked with reducing and removing carbon emissions from Nestle's supply chains by implementing agroforestry and regenerative agriculture within core cocoa communities. The scheme will involve planting over 2 million shade trees on cocoa land managed by close to 20,000 farmers in Ghana and Ivory Coast, with an ultimate goal of removing over 500,000 metric tons of carbon over a 20-year period. Fairtrade Africa, Max Havelaar France and the French Development Agency (AFD France) have launched the Ghana Agroforestry for Impact (GAIM) Project at a short ceremony in Goaso, in the Ahafo region of Ghana. Ghana is the second largest cocoa producer in the world and cocoa is the main export crop. Cocoa production in Ghana faces challenges like increasing environmental degradation, deforestation, ageing farmers, pests and diseases and climate change. The project will focus on the intensification of production systems using Dynamic Agroforestry Techniques; gender and youth inclusion; a feasibility study to establish payment for environmental services; market studies for diversified crop distribution, and more. BASF and Solidaridad have partnered to understand how sustainable farming activities can have an increased effect on biodiversity, environmental conservation and the coexistence of agriculture and pollinators like bees. The project will be conducted within a network of small to mid-sized soybean farmers in Brazil. The partners will be supported by two organizations: GeoApis, to monitor managed bees and facilitate communication between farmers and beekeepers, and Wheatley Young Partners, to assess the feasibility of a nature-market in Brazil, where farmers are paid to deliver and maintain environmental service projects on their land. The first phase of the project started in January 2024 and is set to run for twelve months. [link]
ThriveAgric has launched a strategic partnership with Acorn Rabobank in a project committed to sustainable agroforestry practices and carbon market development in Nigeria. The initiative aims to enable over 30,000+ smallholder farmers to gain carbon credit access while benefiting from the adoption of agroforestry practices. The project seeks to enhance carbon sequestration, promote biodiversity, improve soil health, and provide economic benefits to local communities impacting smallholder farmers across 9 states including Kaduna, Gombe, Adamawa, Taraba, Bauchi, Jigawa, Niger, Nassarawa, and Kano states, affording them the opportunity to receive additional income from carbon credits and other climate-smart benefits on the initiative. Demand is high for the Minnesota Department of Agriculture’s (MDA) new Soil Health Financial Assistance Grant, which recently awarded 81 grants to individual producers, producer groups, and local governments to purchase or retrofit soil health equipment. The grants total over $2.35 million. Interest far outpaced available funding. The MDA received 284 applications for $8.4 million in requests – more than three times the money in this round of grants. The grants will provide up to 50% cost-share for equipment and parts, up to a cap of $50,000. The soil health practices on those acres include cover cropping, no-till planting, strip tillage, incorporation of perennials into cropping systems, low-disturbance nutrient application, and more. The most common types of equipment noted in the grant awards were no-till drills (21) and strip tillage equipment (12). [link]
Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack announced the availability of $1.5 billion in fiscal year 2024 to invest in conservation and climate solutions through the Regional Conservation Partnership Program (RCPP) as part of President Biden’s Investing in America agenda. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is accepting project proposals now through July 2, 2024, that will help farmers, ranchers, and forest landowners adopt and expand conservation strategies to enhance natural resources while tackling the climate crisis. Additionally, NRCS is announcing progress on its effort to streamline and simplify RCPP and improve processes and implementation. [link]
The U.S. government announced a $6.97 billion investment from the National Clean Investment Fund (NCIF) to Climate United, a national nonprofit focused on delivering the benefits of green technologies to communities across the county. The coalition, composed of Calvert Impact, the Community Preservation Corporation (CPC), and Self-Help, was one of several entities competing to manage a portion of the NCIF, one of three programs under the $27 billion Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund (GGRF). Agricultural climate solutions that may be financed through this opportunity include renewable energy technologies, farm energy efficiency upgrades, technologies to capture or reduce livestock methane emissions, farming practices that reduce nitrous oxide emissions from fertilizer use on crops, and more. In alignment with the Biden Administration's Justice40 initiative, Climate United has committed to deploy at least 60 percent of funds in low-income and disadvantaged communities, at least 20 percent in rural communities, and at least 10 percent in Native communities. In observance of Earth Month, New Seasons Market is launching "Building Better Soil for a Healthier Future," an effort in which the neighborhood grocer and select vendor partners are collaborating to contribute to the vitality of the planet. During the month of April, more than 25 brands found at New Seasons Market’s 21 stores will donate ONE PERCENT of their sales to benefit Zero Foodprint, a non-profit organization dedicated to helping farmers and ranchers implement regenerative agricultural practices. Grass-fed beef producer American Farmers Network (AFN) announced that it has established and implemented criteria for regeneratively raised beef standards through its network of family ranchers, and that it stands ready to lead the effort for a viable certification program across the United States. The company said it already received USDA approval to use the Regenerative Agriculture claim on its packaging for products currently distributed through retail chains across the country. The goal is for future certification criteria across the country to encompass various aspects of beef production, including grazing management, soil health, animal welfare and social responsibility. North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University is at the forefront of a transformative initiative aiming to democratize access to agricultural research and technology across North Carolina. The Climate-Responsive Opportunities in Plant Science (CROPS) project, powered by a $1 million grant from the National Science Foundation’s Regional Innovation Engines, seeks to establish an Agricultural Tech Innovation Corridor stretching from central to eastern North Carolina. The project is poised to lower barriers to market entry for limited-resource farmers and equip them to navigate the challenges posed by climate change. By facilitating access to research-based farming practices and new technologies, CROPS intends to foster entrepreneurial development and sustainable agricultural practices among new, underserved, and small-acreage farmers. Organizers of the fourth annual Agroforestry Open Weekend are expecting a surge of interest from UK farmers, with agroforestry set to receive targeted payments in England under the Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) in 2024. The open weekend takes place from May 17-20, with more than 40 farms in the UK and Ireland expected to open their gates and share knowledge and best practice to those who may be new to agroforestry. The Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (Defra) is promising payments of up to £849/ha for farmers who maintain agroforestry, well above the old Basic Payment Scheme that paid farmers a flat rate of about £250/ha for a wide variety of crops. Denim manufacturer, Soorty, has launched a regenerative agriculture farming initiative in Pakistan aimed at boosting sustainability practices in the industry. The company's Regenagri Initiative in Pakistan has been developed with the Rural Education & Economic Development Society (REEDS) and is aimed at revitalizing agricultural ecosystems through regenerative farming. With the initiative, Soorty not only seeks to produce cotton in a more environmentally friendly manner that fosters transparency and traceability throughout the supply chain but also aims to uplift local farming communities by providing them with the knowledge and resources needed for sustainable cultivation, creating a sustainable agricultural ecosystem for generations to come. Microsoft and climate solutions provider, The Next 150, announced that they have signed a 6-year offtake agreement, with Microsoft purchasing 95,000 tons of carbon removal credits generated by a new biochar production facility in Mexico. Biochar, or biological charcoal, is produced by heating biomass, such as forest residue, wood or crop waste, in the absence of oxygen, creating a stable form of carbon, which when buried in soil enables centuries-long carbon sequestration, in addition to leading to improved soil fertility. Founded in 2022, Switzerland-based The Next 150 is a carbon removal venture developer and operator, aimed at investing and scaling climate solutions projects in emerging markets that generate positive environmental and financial outcomes. New research published in the journal Field Crops Research uncovers how soil fumigation influences soil health across different soil types, with a particular focus on potato fields in Wisconsin, USA. A research team from the University of Wisconsin-Madison collected soil and potato samples from seven commercial potato fields in Wisconsin, with some subjected to fumigation with metam sodium and others left unfumigated. The findings present a nuanced view of soil fumigation’s effects. In central Wisconsin’s sandy soils, fumigated plots not only yielded higher potato outputs but also showcased increased bacterial diversity and microbial-mediated carbon retention compared to their unfumigated counterparts. Conversely, in the northern loamy soils, the results were flipped, with unfumigated plots outperforming the fumigated ones on these fronts. A particularly intriguing discovery was the close association between soil bacterial community diversity and yield responses to fumigation. This suggests that the benefits or drawbacks of fumigation are intricately linked to the microbial life within the soil, highlighting the importance of microbial diversity in agricultural sustainability. In response to longer and more intense droughts, Indigenous Tolupan farmers in Honduras are turning to agroforestry and agroecology strategies to adapt to the changing climate. The strategies include diversifying their crops, building water storage systems, introducing methods to better conserve water in the soil, and building up banks of native seeds. Although Honduras wasn’t among the 22 countries that declared a drought emergency in 2022 and 2023, severe heat waves and El Niño events are hitting harvests hard, leading to an exodus of young people out of rural areas. Locals participating in the adaptation initiative say it’s starting to bear fruit and give them hope — a precious resource in a dry land. [link]
Farmers in Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia will get new support for conservation practices through two grants awarded to the Chesapeake Bay Foundation (CBF) as part of a historic investment in Bay restoration and community engagement, EPA announced this week. CBF’s projects are among 82 new Bay conservation grants worth $35 million awarded by the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF), a nonprofit that administers several Chesapeake Bay grant programs. The 82 grants will leverage $32 million in matching contributions for a total conservation impact of $67 million, according to a NFWF release. [link]
U.S. Senators Michael Bennet (D-Colo.), Mike Crapo (R-Idaho), Tammy Baldwin (D-Wis.), and Jerry Moran (R-Kan.) introduced the Enteric Methane Innovation Tools for Lower Emissions and Sustainable Stock (EMIT LESS) Act to voluntarily reduce methane emissions from dairy and beef cattle across America’s family farms and ranches. Enteric methane is naturally emitted during the digestive process of most livestock species. Methane is a powerful greenhouse gas many times more potent than carbon dioxide. The EMIT LESS Act aims to address enteric methane by expanding research at the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) for products (e.g. feed additives) and practices that reduce these emissions while creating voluntary incentives through conservation programs to help get those products into the hands of farmers and ranchers. UPM Biochemicals is entering the agrochemicals market with the launch of a new range of bio-based plant stimulants, UPM Solargo. UPM Solargo biostimulants offer a sustainable solution for agriculture, providing proven benefits for various crops while reducing their environmental footprint. Unlike conventional fertilizers, UPM Solargo biostimulants enhance plant growth by improving soil microbiome quality and increasing water retention. They do not directly supply nutrients to the plant but instead improve nutrient absorption, utilization efficiency, and stress tolerance. They have the potential to help decrease the demand for classical NPK fertilizers, which contribute up to 80% of CO2 emissions in crop production. [link]
The USDA released its 2024 Prospective Plantings report, showing that American farmers will plant more soybean acres and fewer corn and wheat acres for 2024. Corn acreage is pegged at 90 million acres for 2024, down from 94.6 million acres last year and below analyst estimates of 92.5 million acres. Soybean acreage is pegged at 86.5 million acres for 2024, up from 83.6 million acres last year and slightly below analyst estimates of 87 million acres. The report pegged 2024 wheat acreage at 47.5 million acres, down from 49.6 million acres last year and above analyst estimates of 46.5 million acres. [link]
An event to mark the completion of a China-funded agroforestry project in Myanmar was held in Myanmar's capital Nay Pyi Taw this week, according to a release by the Chinese Embassy in Myanmar. Speaking at the event, Myanmar's Union Minister for Natural Resources and Environmental Conservation U Khin Maung Yi said that agroforestry will help develop the economy and protect the forest ecological system in the Southeast Asian country. He added that the project, with pilot zones of nearly 700 acres in three villages in Nay Pyi Taw, Yangon and Bago regions, has benefited nearly 200 villagers. [link]

Congressman John Duarte (R-CA-13), a member of the House Ag Committee, says he’s unsure if we will see a new Farm Bill introduced and passed in the U.S. in 2024. Duarte notes that farm programs for conservation will spend a significant amount of money over the next few years and that Republicans would prefer to stretch that money out over 10 years, instead. Unless Republicans and Democrats can make a deal, Duarte believes that Congress will extend the 2018 Farm Bill another year into 2025. [link]
The University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) will host a Nebraska Soil Health School on Wednesday, April 24, at UNL’s High Plains Ag Lab in Sidney. The Nebraska Soil Health Schools are designed to build upon soil-related knowledge and practices for growers, crop consultants, ag professionals, and others. The HPAL event will focus on soil health topics in relation to dryland cropping systems, with the following presentations: soil health; the impacts of tillage, biochar, and cover crops; carbon markets; semi-arid systems management; and more. Brock University’s cutting-edge research that advances Canada’s grape and wine industry is expanding from lab to field to other areas of agriculture thanks to a $3.5-million grant from the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI). The funding supports the Clean Agriculture for Sustainable Production (CASP) Field Infrastructure project, which will include the establishment of a Brock-led research farm where scientists from Brock, other institutions and industry will develop agricultural innovations. Specific project workstreams will focus on producing virus-free grapevines for the grape and wine industries; a better understanding of vine interactions with other plants and organisms; and research on precision agriculture. Invasive species can crowd out native species and damage agricultural production, leading to significant costs over time. While solutions themselves can be costly, a new movement is being created to put them on people's dinner plates. The idea, known as invasivorism, refers to eating invasive species to help control their havoc-wreaking populations. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Invasive Species Information Center estimates invasive species cost Americans at least $26 billion a year due to their impact on local environments and economies. Chefs worldwide have started looking to invasive species as sustainable, and even beneficial, ingredients. Still, the movement has struggled to gain traction in part due to consumer concerns over taste and environmental impact. [link]
Scientists from the EPFL in Switzerland have developed a sustainable method to make high-performance plastics from agricultural leftovers, turning them into valuable materials. A study led by Jeremy Luterbacher's team at EPFL unveils a pioneering approach to producing high-performance plastics from renewable resources, introducing a novel method for creating polyamides - a class of plastics known for their strength and durability, the most famous of which are nylons - using a sugar core derived from agricultural waste. The bio-based polyamides exhibit properties that can compete with their fossil counterparts, offering a promising alternative for various applications. [link]
Canada's Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry, along with its Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, have announced an investment of $1.9 million in the Common Ground Canada Network project led by Karen Foster, Canada Research Chair in Sustainable Rural Futures for Atlantic Canada, at Dalhousie University. The investment, made through the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Network on Sustainable Agriculture in a Net-Zero Economy initiative, will focus on the development of a new national research network that works to advance sustainable agricultural sectors and food systems to support a just transition to net-zero in Canada. The Common Ground Canada Network is intended to promote collaboration and partnerships between academic institutions, research institutes, Indigenous communities, non-governmental organizations, industry and producers. This week, American Farmland Trust announced a major step in its efforts to preserve local food sources in the U.S., creating a "U.S Farmed" certification program. The certification and seal are designed to show a brand sources at least 95 percent of its agricultural ingredients from American farms. AFT announced Anheuser-Busch as the first company to earn the seal. [link]
Specialty finance shop Mad Capital has launched its Perennial Fund II that provides US farmers with loans to help them transition to regenerative and/or organic agriculture. The fund has received early commitments from The Rockefeller Foundation, impact investment platform Builders Vision, the Schmidt Family Foundation, family office Lacebark Investments, and many others. The fund, which is targeting $50 million, has already made two closes and is “actively” deploying capital to farmers, says Mad Capital co-founder and CEO Brandon Welch. [link]
Southern Cross University in Australia has produced an online survey in order to understand grain farmers' perceptions of regenerative agriculture, along with their farming practices and goals. The university is seeking 500 crop farmers around the country, followed by an effort to recruit 75 grain growers for a broader three-year project. The ultimate goal is to establish effective ways to monitor the potential benefits or disadvantages of regenerative agriculture in Australian cropping systems across a range of agronomic, soil health, ecological, social, and economic indicators. The UK has pledged £6 million to help train Zambian farmers in “climate-smart agriculture” and reduce deforestation, the Government has said. The funding aims to boost Zambia’s efforts to curb rapid agricultural expansion into forests and woodlands, to help protect nature and cut emissions from deforestation that contribute to climate change. The investment is part of the BioCarbon Fund Initiative for Sustainable Forest Landscapes, a global program to support projects that reduce carbon emissions and promote sustainable land use and conservation of forests. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) is inviting public comments for 45 days on a draft environmental impact statement (EIS) and draft plant pest risk assessment (PPRA) in response to a petition from Bayer CropScience U.S. seeking to deregulate their MON 87429 corn cultivar. This cultivar was produced through genetic engineering to tolerate the herbicides dicamba, glufosinate, quizalofop, 2,4-D, and tissue-specific glyphosate. Bayer states in their petition that the MON 87429 cultivar is intended for hybrid seed production and is unlikely to pose plant pest risks. The draft EIS examines potential environmental and socioeconomic impacts that may result from approving Bayer’s petition to deregulate their MON 87429 corn cultivar. The draft PPRA examines potential plant pest risks. [link]
Global food and beverage company Nestlé has launched two new projects aimed at reducing and removing carbon emissions from the company’s cocoa supply chain. Developed with suppliers Cargill and ETG | Beyond Beans, the new five-year projects will promote agroforestry, accelerate the transition to regenerative agriculture and support the reforestation of degraded lands around cocoa farming communities. Nestlé, home to leading chocolate brands including Kit Kat and Nesquik, is one the world’s largest corporate cocoa consumers, sourcing roughly 430,000 tons per year, with much of the supply sourced from Ghana and the Ivory Coast. Farmers in Cornwall, England are planting thousands of trees on their land as part of a government-funded project to create more woodlands and tree cover across the country. More than 4,000 trees have already been planted as part of pilot projects, with an overall target of 32,000 by next winter. Cornwall Council's Forest for Cornwall team supports the agroforestry pilot projects with funding from the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs' Woodland Creation Partnership Fund. Bayer has announced a partnership with UK-headquartered company, Trinity Agtech, wishing to leverage its platform "Sandy", which will be instrumental for Bayer's Carbon Initiative to measure and monitor carbon at the farm level in the EMEA region. The cooperation will also enable the customized development of Bayer's solutions to value chain players’ needs and growers based on Trinity's capabilities. Early project results show that growers that are using regenerative practices are emitting on average 15 percent less carbon than conventional farmers. [link]
A new study published in Science this week finds that expanding organic cropland can lead to increased pesticide use in surrounding non-organic fields, offsetting some environmental benefits. These harmful "spillover effects" can be mitigated if organic farms are clustered together and geographically separated from conventional farms, the researchers found. One of the main issues relates to tradeoffs involving beneficial species like birds and spiders that prey on insect pests to farmers and their crop land. Organic fields can harbor more of these beneficial species, however this can drive pests into nearby conventional fields. [link]
Researchers from the University of Bonn and the Swiss Federal Institution of Technology (ETH) Zurich have published a database containing over 6,000 agri-environmental policies, thus enabling their peers as well as policymakers and businesses to seek answers to all manner of different questions. The researchers have used two examples to demonstrate how this can be done: how a country's economic development is linked to its adoption of agri-environmental policies and how such policies impact soil erosion. Their study has now been published in Nature Food. [link]

Industry Updates
Red Tractor, the food chain assurance scheme in the UK, has confirmed that it is dropping plans to launch a green farming assurance standard in April. The British food assurance body sparked uproar from farmers across the UK last year when it announced the Greener Farms Commitment (GFC) – an optional standard for farmers that meet certain environmental criteria. Farmers feared the GFC would eventually evolve into a requirement for market access and would mean they foot the bill for implementing sustainability measures on behalf of supermarkets. Following the backlash, Red Tractor halted the development of the GFC as the National Farmers Union (NFU) carried out a governance review into the organization. [link]
Walmart Inc. plans to build its third milk processing plant in Robinson, Texas. The plant is scheduled to open in 2026. Walmart opened its first milk processing plant in 2018, in Fort Wayne, Ind., and previously announced a $350 million facility in Valdosta, Ga., which is scheduled to open in 2025. Building its own milk processing plants gives the retailer better visibility into the sources of its products and strengthens its supply chain, according to the company. [link]
Extension specialists at the University of California and University of Arizona have teamed up on a prototype steam applicator that injects steam into the soil to kill weeds and control soilborne pathogens. Work for the prototype was funded by the Propane Council. It works on a simple process of injecting steam several inches into the soil to raise the temperature sufficiently to kill the targeted seeds and pests, without sterilizing the soil. Studies have shown that heating the soil to 140 degrees for over 20 minutes at a depth of two inches effectively kills 89% of the weed seeds ahead of planting. [link]
Leaders with University of Idaho’s College of Agricultural and Life Sciences (CALS) dedicated a new laboratory in Parma that promises to advance crop science and technology, helping farmers adapt to a changing world. More than 200 stakeholders attended the grand opening of the 9,600-square-foot Idaho Center for Plant and Soil Health, which contains laboratory space for research in nematology, pomology, plant pathology, microbiology and hops quality. CALS launched the campaign to construct the $12.1 million facility in 2019. Construction was made possible thanks to $3 million in donations from agricultural stakeholders, in addition to investment from the university and the state of Idaho. [link]
First Milk, a prominent UK dairy processor, has introduced a variable regenerative bonus for its suppliers, designed to acknowledge and reward farmers for their dedicated efforts in advancing regenerative farming practices. The variable regenerative bonus is an additional incentive on top of an existing 0.5 pence per liter regenerative bonus already in place, which is tied to the successful completion of a regenerative farming plan each year. This new multi-tiered bonus structure will better demonstrate First Milk's commitment to promoting sustainability and supporting farmers engaged in regenerative practices. [link]
Saskatchewan Minister of Agriculture, David Marit, announced a funding commitment of $15 million over five years to the Global Institute for Food Security (GIFS) at the University of Saskatchewan in Canada. Founded in 2012 as part of the University of Saskatchewan’s world-class agri-science hub, GIFS works with its partners to provide expertise and leadership in the discovery, development and delivery of innovative solutions to produce globally sustainable food. The funding for GIFS will provide $3 million each year from 2023-2027 to support its ongoing operations, contributing to Saskatchewan’s agriculture sector through work such as supporting crop breeding through sequencing, bioinformatics and data analytics services or technology development that facilitates commercialization of new products. Amsterdam is the latest city to back the citizen-led Plant Based Treaty, which acknowledges that food can't be ignored when it comes to dealing with the climate crisis. The non-binding Plant Based Treaty now has 26 municipalities pledging to take the matter seriously, including Los Angeles; Didim, Turkey; Kyotera, Uganda; Norwich, U.K., and 15 cities in India, where nearly four in 10 people identify as vegetarian, the highest rate in the world. The treaty is modelled after the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty – a global agreement to phase out oil and gas production. Among the Plant Based Treaty’s goals are halting deforestation attributed to animal agriculture, pushing for subsidies that incentivize a plant-based food system, and freeing up land to rewild and reforest the earth. A $25 million Ecotron project at the University of Idaho is nearly finished and expected to become operational by 2026. An Ecotron is a device that allows scientists to drill into the soil and obtain samples on the microbes, chemicals, minerals and elements present in the ground. There are 13 other Ecotron projects in the world, most of them in Europe, but none of them will go as deep as the one at the University of Idaho. Idaho researchers say most of the soil examination is done to a depth of about a foot, but not much further. Researchers say they expect to make a lot of new discoveries and ultimately find ways to improve soil conditions and help boost farming production. [link]
Brazil's soybean crop is estimated to be down 4% from last year, following a hot and dry growing season. Despite recent rainfall and a break in temperatures, analysts say that more precipitation is still required to recover soil moisture. [link]
The Biden-Harris Administration has released the President’s Budget Request for Fiscal Year 2025 (FY25), requesting $29.2 billion in discretionary budget authority for USDA, roughly $900 million less than the Administration’s FY24 request. Of note, the budget would increase funding for Conservation Technical Assistance (+8.5%) and the Office of Urban Agriculture and Innovative Production (+77%) compared to the FY2023 enacted level. Tyson Foods, Inc. is closing a pork processing plant in Perry, Iowa. The closing is scheduled to happen on June 28, according to a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notice filed with the state of Iowa. The company has closed several plants during the past year. In March 2023, Tyson announced it would close its Van Buren, Ark., and Glen Allen, Va., poultry processing facilities. Five months later, the company announced an additional four plant closings, those in North Little Rock, Ark.; Corydon, Ind.; Dexter, Mo.; and Noel, Mo. The closings are part of the company’s efforts to right-size its supply chain as its beef, chicken and pork businesses struggle to address supply/demand imbalances, input cost inflation and shifts in consumer demand. The governments of Ecuador, India, Kenya, Laos, Philippines, Uruguay, and Vietnam have come together to launch a $379 million initiative to combat pollution from the use of pesticides and plastics in agriculture. Chemicals play a crucial role in farming, with nearly 4 billion tons of pesticides and 12 billion kg of agricultural plastics used every year, however these chemicals pose significant risks to human health and the environment. The Financing Agrochemical Reduction and Management Program – or FARM – led by the UN Environment Program (UNEP) with financial support from the Global Environment Facility (GEF), seeks to change that by working with banks and policy-makers to reorient policy and financial resources towards farmers to help them adopt low- and non-chemical alternatives to toxic agrochemicals and facilitate a transition towards better practices. The European Commission is finalizing a series of legislative proposals that would severely weaken environmental requirements for farmers — flying in the face of advice by its top scientists that agriculture must become more sustainable or it will be decimated by climate change. The proposals would end a requirement to set aside land to promote biodiversity, making it and other measures — such as minimizing tillage to prevent soil erosion — voluntary. The dramatic policy reversal by Ursula von der Leyen’s Commission comes at the urging of national governments desperate to quell protests by farmers who have taken to the streets around Europe, and in Brussels, to vent their fury at the environmental red tape they say is destroying their livelihoods. Nebraska has submitted its plan to reduce greenhouse gases, financed by a $3 million federal Climate Pollution Reduction Grant. The 76-page “Priority Climate Action Plan,” is part of an effort, via the federal Inflation Reduction Act, to finance state plans and then provide $4.6 billion in competitive grants to implement the state plans. Its priority measures include promoting energy efficiency at nonresidential facilities, incentives for home energy upgrades, incentives for irrigation conversion from diesel to electric, funding for solar projects and regenerative agriculture projects, and incentives for precision agriculture and the use of biochar, among other pursuits. Scientists are learning more about what sources of meat could serve as more sustainable alternatives to beef, pork and chicken. The answer? Pythons, which produce large slabs of white meat similar to a chicken filet. Python meat could offer a form of meat much less carbon intensive than the current options, according to researchers who studied farms in Southeast Asia for two species of pythons -- reticulated and Burmese -- for 12 months. Farmed python meat may offer a more sustainable alternative to other farmed meat because they can reproduce rapidly, even when food is not abundantly available, according to a study published in Scientific Reports this week. Planet and Bayer are partnering to shape the future of farming with resilient supply chains and enhanced product development. Combining Planet's satellite imagery products with Bayer's crop and data science expertise, field managers will be able to evaluate field progression on a near real-time basis, making sure growers have the right seed in the right place at the right time. Bayer's business partners will now be able to look at Planet's data feeds across four continents and hundreds of thousands of acres of crop land to evaluate global supply chain readiness. [link]
Global conglomerate, Unilever, has partnered with UK nature intelligence firm, NatureMetrics, to harness environmental DNA (eDNA) technologies in a bid to drive regenerative farming practices across its supply chain. NatureMetrics will provide eDNA sampling technology to measure changes in bacterial and fungal diversity in soil, as well as insect diversity, across thousands of hectares in four key locations of Unilever's supply chain in Argentina, Canada, the UK, and Europe. The data gathered, along with other biodiversity metrics, will inform the assessment of the impact of regenerative farming practices implemented by one of the world's largest consumer goods companies. The EU-backed food innovation community, EIT Food, and Foodvalley, have unveiled a €30 million (US$32.8 million) Regenerative Innovation Portfolio to leverage regenerative agriculture’s potential in Europe. The move is expected to foster greater collaboration across sectors and value chains to help farmers transition to regenerative agriculture practices, leading to its acceleration and scale-up. The Portfolio — established as a Food Innovation Hub Europe Initiative — will use the cash injection to launch and support landscape initiatives, ecosystem development and inter-landscape learning. Amidst growing global concern for sustainable agriculture and animal welfare, a groundbreaking study has emerged, promising a new dawn in the way we perceive and manage livestock farming. Spearheaded by researchers at the University of Cambridge, this innovative approach to assessing animal welfare on farms utilizes a new assessment tool that has started by evaluating various UK pig farming systems, revealing a hierarchy in animal welfare standards across different certification labels. Woodland and organic farms topped the list, offering the best conditions for pigs, followed by free-range, RSPCA assured, and Red Tractor certified farms, with uncertified farms ranking lowest. This assessment is pivotal for consumers seeking to make ethical food choices, potentially influencing market demand towards higher welfare products. Additionally, the new welfare assessment system is able to integrate animal welfare scores into a unified life cycle assessment of farming practices, solving the problem of animal welfare concerns not previously being present in life cycle assessments. A study by researchers at University College London, the University of Edinburgh, and the UK Center for Ecology & Hydrology has discovered a severe imbalance between potassium removal and replenishment within the global farming industry. Potassium plays a significant role in the growing of crops, acting as a vital nutrient for plant growth and helping with photosynthesis and respiration. The study, published in Nature Food, found that approximately 20% of global agricultural soils face severe potassium deficiency, with certain regions suffering worse than others. If nutrient imbalances are not addressed, crop yields are expected to decline, ahead. [link]
University of Minnesota Extension corn and soybean entomologists are initiating a new project to evaluate pests that feed on seeds and seedlings in corn and soybean fields. In areas with severe infestations, these pests can cause significant stand losses or even require replanting of fields. Despite these potential impacts, much remains unknown about these pests in Minnesota corn and soybeans. The entomologists are seeking cooperating farmers to allow their research team to sample corn and soybean fields from April to June 2024, with an eye on fields recently coming out of pasture, no-till, follow-on from cover cropping, high organic matter content, and no insecticide treatments in recent years. All participants will receive a free report on the pests encountered in their fields. [link]
The agrifood sector should build a coalition of groups to take on the task of explaining sustainable farm practices to consumers to build public trust in them, says Michael McCain, Executive Chair of Maple Leaf Foods Inc. The sector needs to focus on assuring consumers that sustainable food production will be good for the environment and food safety, he told the Canadian Agriculture Day conference during a panel discussion on making sustainability profitable for farmers. It is also important for everyone in the sector to realize that for them to be successful, everyone else must be as well. [link]
U.S. farmers investing in soil health practices like cover crops, no-till, diversified crop rotations, and integrated livestock grazing, are invited to participate in two Practical Farmers of Iowa (PFI) on-farm research trials. The first explores whether these practices support using less nitrogen fertilizer. The second trial aims to find out if cover crops give farmers greater access to their fields over a season. Many farmers have observed that using soil health practices long-term improves soil function. But most don’t have scientific data from their own fields. By taking part in these trials, farmers will have a chance to empirically test the impacts of those soil health investments on their own farms. [link]
The Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development has awarded a $1.5 million grant to Kutztown University to support its Regenerative Organic Agriculture track in collaboration with the Rodale Institute. Funding will support student scholarships; internships; renovations to the university teaching greenhouse; professional development for students, faculty, and Rodale Institute employees; farming equipment; and land care. The Rodale Institute is widely recognized as the global leader in regenerative organic agriculture. KU and the Institute signed a five-year agreement of academic cooperation in 2021, establishing a research affiliation for the mutual benefit of both institutions. [link]
Plans to protect and restore the English countryside with a pioneering landscape resilience program have successfully expanded into Yorkshire. The Landscape Enterprise Networks (LENs) program, spear-headed by sustainability consultancy 3Keel and Nestlé Purina Petcare, has completed its first trading initiative. The program has brought together global alcohol business Diageo, Nestlé Purina, and farmers in Yorkshire. Nestlé Purina and Diageo have partnered to invest in measures across almost 700 hectares of arable land in the Selby, Thirsk, Vale of York and Goole areas of the county. The investment will support farmers to introduce a wide range of regenerative agricultural practices, including reduced cultivation systems, improving nutrient use efficiency and introducing grazing livestock into the rotation. Through LENs, the companies work with supply chain partners to enhance on-farm sustainability and production resilience, as well as delivering improvements in biodiversity and water quality. [link]
As consumer interest grows around the health and sustainability benefits of food, the Nutrient Density Alliance has released guidelines for brands looking to substantiate nutrient density claims related to their regenerative agriculture practices. The Nutrient Density Alliance is a pre-competitive effort sponsored by the Soil & Climate Alliance and the Non-GMO Project that focuses on connecting regenerative agriculture practices, soil health and human health outcomes. The guidelines - "Engaging Consumers On Regenerative Agriculture: How Brands Can Integrate Nutrient Density for Top-line Growth" - include actionable information for key departments such as marketing, quality, and legal to follow when developing brand information on nutrient density, identifying potential partnerships and required data, and considering how to message improved nutrition to consumers. Applegate, a leading natural and organic American meat brand, announced its goal to transition all of its beef hot dogs to beef raised on verified regenerative grasslands by the end of 2025. Implementing this change across its entire beef hot dog portfolio is expected to contribute to the regeneration of six million acres of grasslands, which could increase the current regenerative acreage of Applegate suppliers by more than 2,200%. To transition the 6 million acres of grassland and achieve its goal of improving land health, Applegate will work with its network of more than 250 beef farmers to implement a regenerative standard with third-party verification through certifiers such as Land to Market. Additionally, Applegate will collaborate with umbrella frameworks such as GRASS (Generalized Regenerative Agriculture Sourcing Specification) and the Textile Exchange Regenerative Outcomes Framework to ensure its standards are aligned with industry-accepted metrics for ecological outcomes and animal welfare. CMI Orchards and Royal Family Farming have partnered to launch The Soil Center, the mission of which is to transform byproducts from orchards, row crops, dairy and beef operations into high-quality soil amendments. At the heart of The Soil Center's mission is the development of the world's largest worm farm and a comprehensive waste processing system, aimed at creating soil amendments that can be used in the network of growers producing apples, pears, cherries and more for CMI and Royal Family Farming. The Soil Center is set to break ground by the second quarter of 2024 and start supplying soil amendment products to the CMI grower network by the third quarter of 2024. [link]
Cuba will host the International Agroforestry Convention “Cuba 2024”, to be held on July 1 to 5 with the participation of some 400 researchers, academics, entrepreneurs, producers and communicators from Colombia, Mexico, Ecuador, Italy and the host country. Discussion topics relate to forests and their relationship with society, biodiversity and ecosystem services, climate change and production, as well as forest protection, integrated pest and disease management, and sustainable agricultural production technologies. There will also be debates about coffee and cocoa production, quality, processing and by-products; plantation, soil and nutrient management; beekeeping development; biodiversity, environment and pollination; healthy food and apitherapy; and international cooperation, among others. A new project is combining cutting-edge UK ag-tech tools with research and development expertise to help growers learn more about the role roots play in maintaining healthy soils. The TRUTH (Thriving Roots Underpinning Total soil Heath) project is a three-year, £1 million Defra-funded study that will bring together experts in soil and root health, sensor technology and wheat genetics. They will work alongside farmers and growers who conduct trials on their own farms with the goal of identifying the tools they need to assess their crop roots and quantify the impact of their farming system. A new wheat standard in the UK that aims to encourage regenerative farming practices and cut chemical use is offering a £20/t premium for compliant farmers. Established by the Green Farm Collective in collaboration with Food Integrity Assurance (FIA), the new standard involves the reduced use of synthetic crop protection products, caps on nitrogen and mandatory crop rotations. Farmers must follow a set of criteria such as using strip-till or zero-till and apply no more than 180kg nitrogen/ha. A maximum of two fungicide applications with just one spray of plant growth regulator is permitted. Insecticides and pre-harvest glyphosate are not allowed. [link]

Industry Updates
The Belize Ministry of Agriculture and the University of Belize recently hosted a 2-day training for technical officers focused on regenerative cattle production. The primary objective is the establishment of a model farm under silvopastoral systems, serving as a showcase for sustainable practices. The University of Belize is at the forefront of coordinating this phase, actively collecting data to validate the efficacy of silvopastoral systems in cattle production. [link]
The Ontario and Yates County Soil and Water Conservation Districts in New York State have partnered with the Canandaigua Lake Watershed Association to hold a 2024 Soil Health Workshop focused on soil improvement, crop and livestock management, and water cleanliness on February 27th at the Benton Fire Hall, Penn Yan, NY. This year’s workshop features keynote speaker Eric Fuchs from Understanding Ag, a recognized authority in regenerative agriculture. Fuchs, with his dual expertise as a diversified livestock operator and a source water protection technician, will provide valuable insights into how soil health is intrinsically linked to community water protection efforts. A new and innovative approach utilized by soil scientists from the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences has helped turn huge swathes of salty soil into fertile farmlands. The experiments were attempted in the Wuyuan county region in the Inner Mongolia region of China. A team of soil scientists used crop stalks of lengths varying between two to six inches (5-15 cm) and buried them flat into the soil at a depth of about one foot (30-40 cm). The ground above was then covered with a plastic sheet to help retain moisture. The crop stalks prevented salts from rising to the surface, reducing the soil’s salt content by as much as 36 percent on average, and creating a 30.5 percent increase in yield. According to estimates from the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), as much as nine percent of Earth’s landmass is salinized and unsuitable for agriculture in its present form. Researcher MarketsandMarkets says that the beneficial insects market - comprising the production and distribution of insects like ladybugs, lacewings, mites and wasps for agricultural purposes - is projected to reach $1.63 billion by 2028 compared to $877 million in 2023. Beneficial insects help to control pests in agricultural crops through biological control methods. This market has grown in significance due to increasing interest in sustainable agriculture and organic farming practices, which aim to reduce reliance on chemical pesticides. Beneficial insects offer a natural and environmentally friendly alternative for pest management, contributing to healthier ecosystems and reducing the environmental impact of agriculture. [link]
RegenFarmCo will work with the Swinto Estate in North Yorkshire, England to create innovative upcycling and agroforestry projects across its 20,000 acres. The cultivation of crops on the same land as trees has numerous environmental benefits, as well as providing habitats for birds, insects and other wildlife. The partnership will also see RegenFarmCo and Swinton Estate working with others to share the knowledge acquired from the implementation of regenerative farming, through knowledge exchanges, training opportunities and encouraging others to get involved. As spring nears, Iowa farmers are starting to worry about moisture levels based on the latest U.S. Drought Monitor map that shows almost a fifth of the state in extreme drought, with more than half of Iowa in severe drought. Even with several heavy snows in January, February is wrapping up warmer and drier than normal, which is worrisome for farmers. Forecasters say there’s a chance for a mix of rain and snow, but it likely won’t be significant enough to make a dent in the drought. March 19 is the first day of spring. [link]
What began as a group of Byron, Minnesota farmers looking for ways to make their farmland more sustainable has turned into a multimillion dollar county soil health initiative that now goes by the Byron Area Farmers Soil Health Group. The group of farmers have plotted together and implemented conservation practices which evolved into them creating a marketing group for food-grade oats in 2020. Recently, the Byron group held an open forum outside Rochester to discuss water quality in the area. The Byron Area Farmers Soil Health Group is responsible for helping to lay the groundwork for Olmsted County's $5 million groundwater protection and soil health initiative, after county commissioners began looking for solutions to nitrate contamination in the water. The European Parliament has approved a Nature Restoration Law by a margin of 54 votes. Under the law, member states will have two years to plan how they will restore 20% of the EU's land and sea areas by 2030 and all ecosystems by 2050. Although binding, there are exemptions for member states along with an emergency brake facility, whereby the targets for agricultural ecosystems can be temporarily suspended under exceptional circumstances. According to the European Commission, over 80% of Europe's natural habitats are in poor health. [link]
Simplot Grower Solutions and Innvictis BioScience have introduced a product designed to maximize the utilization of the nutrients found in crop residue. Evaness is a unique blend of nutrients and enzymes that will accelerate the breakdown of crop residues and increase the availability of nutrients contained in the residue left in the field. [link]
This week, Canada's Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food announced funding of $3.1 million to the Canadian Agri-Food Policy Institute (CAPI) under the AgriAssurance Program - National Industry Association Component. This funding will be used to make improvements to the National Index on Agri-Food Performance, which acts as a point of reference for companies to declare the sustainability of their practices. CAPI will use the funding to include more partners in refining the tool, fix missing information, and create an upgraded version of the Index. The Index looks at how sustainable Canada's farming and food sector is from food production to retail, covering things like how it affects the environment, the quality of food, and how it helps the economy and society. Unilever has launched its first regenerative agriculture program in the UK, in a bid to support farms producing mustard seeds and mint leaves for its Colman's condiments. The project will initially trial regenerative agriculture practices at mustard and mint farms around Norwich and Peterborough over the next four years, including some farms which have supplied Colman's for more than 200 years. The projects will see the food giant work with farmers to use low carbon fertilizer, adopt improved crop nutrition strategies, plant cover and companion crops to reduce pesticides use, and install new digital water irrigation scheduling systems. Researchers at Robert Gordon University in Scotland are contributing to a new study to find out how the UK can expand its trees, hedgerows, woodlands and forests in rural and urban settings. The researchers want to find out more about the social and ecological implications of agroforestry – which is the growing of trees alongside crop and livestock farming on the same land – in rural areas and surrounding towns and cities in the UK. The UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) body has commissioned research to improve its understanding of treescapes in the UK, and their value to people and the planet, and has committed £14.5 million funding to support the studies. The Soil & Climate Health Initiative (SCI) is launching a new regenerative agriculture label in the U.S., representing a "holistic, science-based commitment to farming systems." The SCI verified label will debut on PACHA bread loaves and Root Chips potato chip products nationwide before more products sporting the label hit grocery stores over the next 12 months. The verification process includes farms demonstrating that they have completed baseline soil tests, developed a three-year farm plan, and provided evidence of implementation of sufficient regenerative practices to meet minimum requirements. The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) has been selected as the primary recipient of a four-year, $935,000 grant from the USDA’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) to establish the Coalition for Regenerative Ecologies and Agriculture (CREA). This coalition, co-located in San Antonio and in Veracruz, Mexico, will train at least 40 undergraduate and graduate students for a wide range of leadership-track careers in regenerative agriculture by developing their skills in global-resource management, community-engaged research and transcultural literacy. Bayer has announced several enhancements to its Bayer Carbon Program that provide all-new opportunities for more U.S. farmers to earn incentives for implementing regenerative agriculture practices that sequester carbon while promoting soil health. Updates include additional geographies of eligibility, a new Nitrogen Management Program, an expanded list of covered cash crops, historical payments, and more. Unlike some other carbon-based sustainability programs that incentivize farmers, the Bayer Carbon Program bases revenue potential on the practices performed, instead of how many tons of carbon are captured. Farmers who enroll eligible fields, perform their selected regenerative agriculture practices and pass practice verification, have the potential to earn an annual payment of up to $12 per acre. If a farmer participates in the Nitrogen Management Program, that payment could be as high as $16 per acre in years when the enrolled field is planted with corn. Depending on when the selected practices were adopted, farmers could also receive a one-time historical practices payment of up to $48 per acre for implementing cover crops and select reduced tillage practices beginning on or after August 1, 2019. New York Attorney General, Letitia James, filed a lawsuit against giant meat producer, JBS, accusing the company of making misleading claims about its greenhouse gas emission goals to boost sales among environmentally conscious consumers. The lawsuit filed in a state court in New York City alleges that the company claimed it will achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040 despite having no viable plan to meet that commitment. The lawsuit names as defendants JBS USA Food Company and JBS USA Food Company Holdings, the American subsidiary of the world-leading producer of beef products based in Brazil. [link]
The agriculture ministry in Japan has begun an initiative to label rice and vegetables that contribute to a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and preserve biodiversity during their production. The labels will be prominently featured on product packaging and posters, serving as a visual cue for environmental efforts and aiming to enhance consumer awareness toward fostering a sustainable food system. The label denotes a grade from 1 to 3, represented by stars, reflecting the magnitude of reduction achieved. Higher reduction efforts are granted a greater number of stars. [link]
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced that it is establishing a new office to expand engagement opportunities with agricultural and rural communities. The creation of the first-ever EPA Office of Agriculture and Rural Affairs represents the Biden-Harris Administration’s ongoing commitment to improving environmental stewardship and economic opportunity for America’s farmers and ranchers, as well as strengthening the vitality of small towns and rural communities. In close coordination with EPA’s program offices and regions, the office will forge practical, science-based solutions that protect the environment while ensuring a vibrant and productive agricultural system. Additionally, the new office will facilitate closer coordination with relevant federal and state partners such as the U.S. Department of Agriculture, U.S. Food and Drug Administration, and state departments of agriculture.
